Another Konami BANGER! Mystic Warriors! The Pseudo Arcade Sequel to Sunset Riders!

In the 90s Konami was ON FIRE! Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, The Simpson's Arcade, Sunset Riders, Bucky O'Hare, Contra...you name it, they made it! But they also made Mystic Warriors, which is a spiritual sequel to Sunset Riders and a legit awesome run and gun arcade game that feels a bit like a beat em up too!

Hello and welcome to "The Unported Playlist"

So we decided to extend this playlist from 10 games to does it even matter what the count is anymore? lol it's a lot!

On this episode we are looking at Mystic Warriors from Konami! It's an absolute blast of a 2D 90s arcade retro gaming experience and one I bet not everyone will have heard of as it doesn't get near the attention as stuff like The Simpson's Arcade or TNMT from Konami. Which is a bummer because as far as retrogaming is concerned Konami was hitting home runs in this era of classic arcade gaming! Sadly it never got a home console port...which is why its here!

Questions? Comments? Just leave them below and I will do my best to answer each and every one of them!

I am playing this via MAME emulation.

I love how you can see in their _original_ games like this, Violent Storm, and Metamorphic Force, etc. that Konami's artists and designers were still 100% programmed to think of everything in terms of Saturday Morning cartoon, lol. Working on too many TMNT, Bucky O Hare, and Wild West Cowboys of Moo Mesa games all around the same time, I guess; you just naturally absorb all the skill necessary to make a product like this that looks like it should have had a line of action figures. That's the only way you'd create such colorful characters as Mystic Heroes have (these are THE most neon-tinted ninjas from the '90s, lol), and the boss dialogue is SO good and SO authentic to a '90s Saturday Morning Cartoon. I wish that every once in awhile someone would make a game with this kind of energy to it again.

Just played this yesterday and it's great! It's been ported to the ps4 as of few weeks back. Nice review!

I love the attract mode to this game - and also how the teammate kidnapped is randomized

I first played this in a tiny arcade at the Polynesian Resort in Disney World as a kid (back when this would have still been a fairly new release), and I wound up enjoying it more than a lot of Disney itself. Years later I heard about MAME and this was the only thing I wanted to get working on it, if only to confirm that it had been as amazing as I remembered, but it took a while to be fully supported (sound didn't work for years, and big effects would make the game crawl).

It was worth the wait. This absolutely rules, and is easily my favorite Konami arcade game.

Also, everyone chooses that character to play as, for good reason. You just can't deny that hair.

The soundtrack to this game is the real standout. It's amazing. Someone needs to release it on vinyl and cd.

Thanks for covering this game.
Talking about Sunset Riders spirtual successors, check out, Wild West C.O.W.-Boys of Moo Mesa, which was released a month before Mystic Warriors.

It’s great seeing you have so many subscribers now. I remember on the arcade forums you used to be ignored by the majority whenever you posted links to your channel. Hope you have even greater success in the future.

This is a great game, I found it years ago on MAME and played 2player co-op one night with my buddy. It's a lot of fun. I love the colour palette they used, it was unusual at the time.

Man, I haven't played this game in years VGE. The last time I played Mystic Warriors was in a Nathan's arcade room in Yonkers, NY and that was 25 years ago. Thank you for sharing this with us bro. I haven't thought about this game in years. 8^)

I felt like I’d heard of it but I don’t recall any cabinets of it in my local arcades growing up.. I need to get MAME up and running there’s so many great arcades that we missed out on. And I agree Konami needs to put out a collection of games for consoles/steam for all these games that never got ports or at least throw it on an arcade1up collection or something like that it looks beautiful when was it released?

Unfortunately it's still not well emulated, as you know the ending cutscene and some scenes are completely borked due to the lack of fading transparency effects. You can check out the missing FX in Janet's playthrough of the game where he uses a real PCB.
