Why are there extra differences in the 2 animated designs . They both use the 2 valve 4 stroke Otto cycle, petrol engine has a spark plug to ignite the fuel/air mix after compression, diesel self-ignites when compressed . Optimal dimensions differ on real engines, but drawing only the important difference will help the explanation .

Is wrong, no? The diesel are the ones that have the chamber on the piston head while the petrol ones normally has a flat piston

But not included is the butterfly choke on the petrol air inlet - which wastes a ton of energy at small throttle high revs - and the diesel piston all but touches the head with a dent in it for the combustion chamber - I.e. Two or 3 times the expansion ratio cf Petrol engine.
Therefore Diesel needs light "welly" and low speed for best efficiency
Petrol needs moderate Wellie and high gear for best fuel efficiency.

Diesel has high torque, so if you notice the piston is not very wide.

Diesel: sucks only air in and has fuel injected directly into the cylinder.
Petrol: has gas and air sucked in through the intake valve and has no internal injector inside the piston only injectors along fuel rail.

P.S.Both of these engines are 4 strokes induction, compression, power, exhaust.they do make 2 stroke diesel engines but usually must have a supercharger for internal scavenging.By the way wankle rotary engines are. Also 4 cycle engines they can't be called 4 stroke because of the rotary action of the engine but they are NOT 2 STROKE they. have induction, compression, power, exhaust.there is no scavenging.

Both engines should be th same. The gasoline engines now inject fuel directly into the combustion chamber like diesels.
