First Look: New Volkswagen Transporter

Here's our first look at the the new Volkswagen Transporter van, and it’s fair to say that it has very different styling from its predecessor.

Whereas the outgoing T6.1 Transporter had a look clearly derived from the 1990 T4, this latest Transporter gets distinctly different front-end styling, with a much more curved engine cover, giving it an almost snub-nosed look.

Around the back, it’s easy to see the commonality between this new Transporter and the latest Ford Transit Custom van — both cars share a platform and engines and will be built in the same factory in Turkey — but VW has added some separation between the two with different rear lights and some subtle reshaping around the bumper.

It’s such a pity that VW has decided to let Ford do all the work such as designing and producing the new transporter. The VW managers talk about their Icon, but how is it possible that you treat one of your icons like this! Could you imagine that VW decided tot hand over the design and production of the Golf to one of their competitors? No VW, you have gambled that your clients would believe that your new Transporter is a real VW, but it’s just a Ford Transit with a different front end and steering wheel! As a very loyal VW customer I feel that you let me and for sure a lot of other VW customers (adepts), down. I have driven all the T7 predecessors but for sure I am not buying this Ford Transit clone! Thanks (not!) VW for squandering your iconic Transporter and alienating your loyal customers!😢

to the camera man: next time, go around and show us what he is talking about, the bottons, knobs, the display atc... basically, you are filming the face of a guy talking, but we want to see the van.

Sad that vw has allowed Ford to design of VW transporter now a vw Ford transit ….icon gone I’ll stick with my T5 . one thanks😮

More LAZY engineering from VW Now we will see plenty of Rusty Transporters in 10 years time Ill be sticking with my T6 for a long time yet

Unfortunately its a Ford Transit with a VW badge on it and again unfortunately I believe it has the Ford wet belt cam belt

Can't take this anymore. How disappointing is this all. VW is killing all it's icons. Never asked the costumers what the want. I want a real Bulli made in Hannover Germany. Until then I will drive my T6.1

It's not a VW. It's a VW Transit a.k.a. Ford Transporter...It doesn't look bad, but pls don't call this a VW.

The T4, T5, T6 and T6.1 were superior vehicles in every way compared with the Transits. How many 10 year old Transits do you see still chugging around? I cannot understand why Volkswagen has gone into partnership with Ford and moved production from Hamburg to Turkey. The front end styling is a complete disaster compared with the Transit, but I guess that was Ford’s objective.

If I want a Transit I'll buy a Ford, what are VW thinking going with this Ford partnership, no matter how you sugar coat it, its a Ford Transit with a VW badge, I'm sure some muppet in VW got a big bonus for coming up with this bright idea, how to loose a good market share in one easy lesson !!!

Why lower standard of most iconic van with ford, have had been driving transporter for 25 years and won’t be changing from t6.1, what a shame vw selling soul

The Pan Americana version is the nicest one since the original T1, but that white one is just a Ford Transit and ugly!!
