Both egoism and utilitarianism seem potentially maladapted to me.

For egoism: what if a parent's self-interests conflict with the needs of their children? That would be maladapted, as all parents behaving in ways contradictory to the needs of their children would result in the extinction of our species.

For utilitarianism: what if producing maximum utility (however we measure it) conflicts in a similar way? Again it would ask a parent to behave in maladapted ways, and this time potentially even if their self-interests are aligned with the needs of their children.

To me any secular framework which ever finds it ethical for a parent to neglect the needs of their children has to be maladapted. As computers ought to compute and airplanes ought to fly, parents ought to take care of their children. That's the fundamental function.
