If you can squat 525lbs for 23 reps you can wear whatever shoes you want

I love how he casually acknowledges that this is more a preference/personal item than required gym equipment. He says "if you can squad in those shoes you're very flexible".

Wide toe box barefoot shoes are great for squatting imo, you can even wear them as everyday shoes for walking and they will help strengthen your feet, ankles and help your toes spread apart.

The Squat is the single most respected exercise in all of bodybuilding 🤔

Wrestling shoes work wonders for me. Good ankle support, very flat, very little cushion or give, and you'll never slip

The best shoes are the ones that allow your foot to push off naturally

Yeah for powerlifting we use any shoe that is really close to the ground. I often use wrestling shoes.

I wish I had wood back in my day, somehow that sounded weird...

... just wear your steel toes guys. That's what I do

This is actually very similar to the Nike Romaleos weightlifting shoe. It’s not wood, but it mimicked exactly what he’s doing. I would say it’s a far superior version to what Tom is showing here. Anyone doing heavy deadlifts and squats is recommended these. They are not cheap at 200, but sites like athleteps dot come have sales during times like holidays (Memorial Day just had one, probably Labor Day will as well) where they have 50 percent off. Spending a hundred (or less since they have some older versions than the current 4 that can be found there cheaper but have the same design) on these is well worth it if you’ll use a pair for lifting only. They’ll last a long time. They are heavy asf and really glue your feet flat to the ground, unlike anything I’ve ever felt.
