Dad had a red Catalina convertible in high school back in 65. A few years ago I was at a 4th of July event and saw a yellow one. I started talking to the guy and told him about dad's. He said when he got his it was originally red. I made the joke that it was probably my dad's. I told him how dad used to have a switch to turn off the power to the tail lights and would run from cops at night. The guy looked at me funny and asked where the switch was. I told him it was in the ashtray. He started laughing and said that there was a switch in the ashtray of his, and they couldn't figure out what it was for. Turns out it was Dad's old car after all!

Back in the mid 70s, a next door neighbor had a Ford Fairlane with drag slicks he kept in his garage. He gave my step-mom's oldest daughter a ride. When he took off, he did a burnout in his garage. The marks are still there to this day.

Dad wasnt a car guy but he had a Dart sitting in the pasture collecting rust through the 70s. He had bought it from my uncle, who had bought it following 3 tours in 'Nam. My uncle ended up passing away from cancer in 1976, so we ended up with it in non-working condition. It sat for years, often used for target practice by local hunters. A guy knocked on the door in 1981ish and paid my dad $200 for the car. Rust and bullet holes aside, dude towed it off being chased by a cloud of angry yellow jackets. After I retired from the military in 2007, I saw one at a car show and remarked to the owner about that old rust bucket, and it turned out that the car was not only the one we owned, but was also the Hemi version. Makes sense 'cause my uncle was kind of a speed nut. My mom wouldnt let us ride with him because he had a 'lead foot and a screw loose.' The current owner is the son of the original buyer, and has said he'll give me first dibs if he ever sells, it but I'm not holding my breath. His dad did a great job of restoring it. My uncle would be proud.

I once raced a 340 Duster north of young st in my 1970 GTO from a set of lights, once the light turned green off we went side by side for the first hundred yards or so and just seconds after shifting to second gear I heard a very loud bang as the driver slowed to pull over to the curb, I followed suit and went to assist if I could. But what happened was that he actually blew his dual exhaust system off at the connecting point off the headers! Couldn't help with that, those days were awesome!

I've heard/read that the 68 hemi dart had the unfortunate possibility of twisting it's frame due to the immense torque to the rear end...thats raw power...

My dad had the Dart when I was a kid and my mom had a Chevy II, later called a Nova. Now I have a red eye hellcat with 795HP and my brother has the 5.0 mustang Cobra. We grew up with that NEED for speed.

I had a 1970 Grand Prix with a Big Block 400 full race cam, and a huge 4 barrel carb, real headers and duel exhaust, with posi traction, automatic. When I was a Senior in high school... UNBELIEVABLE...👍🇺🇸🙏🐕
