A quick overview:
Group: Companion Dogs
Weight: up to 7 pounds
Height: 8 inches to 10 inches tall at the shoulder
Life Expectancy: 12-15 years

A dog breed who’s gentle and fearless, the Maltese greets everyone as a friend. His glamorous white coat gives him a look of haughty nobility, but looks can be deceiving. This is a sprightly, vigorous dog who excels not only as a companion but also as a therapy dog and competitor in such dog sports as agility, obedience, rally, and tracking. But most of all, he loves to be with his people.

No breed is perfect, and Maltese sometimes are intolerant of small children or other dogs, especially if they have been overly pampered by their people. If this occurs, they can become very protective, barking and even biting if animals or people are perceived as a threat to their relationship with their beloved human family.

Even tolerant Maltese are not a good choice for families with small children, however, because they are so small and can be easily injured. Like all dogs, they must be taught their place in your home, and require proper socialization and basic obedience training.

After grieving over the loss of little (Maltese) Toto, I drove for 3 hrs to adopt an older Maltese. He sleeps all the time, with a little tongue that hangs out due to no teeth. He has become my pet that is definitely not a protector, as he only barks when he hears the clink of his feeding bowl. Now an older babe!

Fearless alright; he thinks he can scare away big dogs, but only as long as I'm behind him, or there's a fence between them 🤣

Sharing my grief with others who have lost their Maltese children. We had two girls, Rosie (Posie) and Daisy (Maisy). They were four years apart in age and from different birth families but sisters all the same in our family. We lost Rosie in 2014 at age 15 due to diabetes and Daisy will have been gone one year ago this month (May 2020) after being euthanized at age 16 from declining health due to kidney failure.

Not a day goes by that I don't miss my canine kids, especially when I see others in my neighborhood outside walking with theirs. At first, I wanted to get another Maltese but realize now doing so would disrespect the memories and wonderful years I had with our girls who have crossed the Rainbow Bridge. Looking forward to seeing them again one day and not be separated any longer.

Thanks for reading.

The first dog I ever loved was a Maltese. He lived 15 years and I lost a part of my heart when he left us. We now have another Maltese and I am absolutely in love with him. He is such a goofball and sweet dog. Very sensitive too.
