American Journalist Detained in Russia

Evan Gershkovich, a journalist working for the Wall Street Journal, was arrested on suspicion of espionage. He was brought to a Moscow court, where he was ordered to be held in custody until May 29th. The FSB, Russia’s federal security service, alleges Gershkovich was trying to obtain military state secrets, a charge the Wall Street Journal refutes. The White House says the State Department has been in contact with the Russian government, Wall Street Journal, and Gershkovich’s family.

Now why would any US citizen, regardless of occupation would want to go there knowing full well what the US had to release just to get Griner back?

They have been advised by the State Dept not to enter Russia. Why is he in Russia then ? And expects the State Dept to assist in his release which may now compromise the State Dept’s position. Why did the Wall Street journal agree/ask him to cover a story in Russia putting his life in danger?
