Time to look back at the South African rugby squad for 2024 - how many players were used? Who got the most game time? Is the squad getting too old?

I love the way it took 2 graphs to show PSDT game time. He is a legend. From an Irishman

Really interesting analysis. Feels like next year is the year Rassie will really start to transition to prioritising what he views as the squad for the next Rugby World Cup.

I used to have the mindset that when a player hits 32-34, move on from them. I thought this especially about Sexton and O'Mahoney. I was wrong. Unless there is someone better than them, and as long as they are performing to their usual standards, then age is just a number. Sometimes, a 35 year old like Eben is the better option than a 25 year old who will never be at that level.

Some countries will have cycles of good/average players, like Wales is having. South Africa has a conveyor belt of talent, and even at schoolboy level, it is fierce competition to even make it to a pro club, so they look set for the long term. Yes, some players like Kolbe are extra special, but Arendse is no slouch! Honestly, it went from "Who will replace Habana, to who will replace Mapimpi, to who will replace Kolbe, etc". They always have someone, and now that the politics seem to have died down a lot, and players are picked on merit, everyone who comes through is a top player. They genuinely look set to dominate for years to come.

What an analysis, thank you once again bud for all the time and effort. It’s unreal 🙏🙏🙏 Any chance you can put the initials of the players next to the colours 😬😇 Jesse Kriel most game time in the Boks for 2024, what a legend, this is a great stat!

Love this depth chart!
That reflected team is very strong.
You should also show the most picked bench!
It's a 23 player game nowadays with the Bokke

The interesting one is the emergence of Fassi. What he did was actually to extend Willie's career (and maybe end it). Willie was having some serious concussion issues and with Willemse still injured, posed an issue for Rassie. Fassi got the chance and has made 15 his own for now. By doing that, you can protect Willie (whose contribution in the team is still phenomenal as one of the best readers of the game) by giving him limited time on the field, yet keep him in the group. With his concussion risk, it is perfect and thus extending his career, BUT if Willemse returns to full form, it will become a Fassi/Willemse fight for the 15 jumper and no longer a Fassi/Le Roux fight, by implication ending Willie's test career. I am sure Rassie will still guide him through to 100 test caps, but after that, I am afraid is it going to be very difficult to find a actual rugby-merit spot for him. Rassie may keep him around, like a Schalk Brits in the past, just to let players learn from Willie vision and experience.

a good watch thanks!! I would always keep the bar chart colours the same for any player if they are across multiple positions on the same graphic, and probably try to label each :):)

I am not worried about the future of our midfield Moodie will most likely play there in the future and David Kriel, Ethan Hooker and Henco van Wyk are all waiting for their chance Jerenzo Julius looks good and guys like Ethan Adams at high school are exciting

The most important one is at tighthead. Malherbe and Koch and the third option Nyakane are absolute legends and a lot of the Boks domination has been on their massive shoulders.

But Malherbe is 32, Koch is 34 and Nyakane is 35. This makes Malherbe hopeful for 2027, Koch doubtful and Nyakane almost certainly ruled out.

I would go with Louw and Du Toit as rotating starters and then the mighty Malherbe and Koch to come off the bench. This should see Malherbe through to 2027 and will make Koch a lot more hopeful for the World Cup.

Another position to look at, is outside centre - Kriel is the man, but Inthink now that Am is fit, he'll take a chunk of the game time.

Very interesting and informative analysis. You don't realise how the Boks have shared the load until you see this. I also thought that the Boks had used the most number of players in one season but was obviously incorrect. Thanks, keep up the great work. 🏉👍
