Neptune FPGA Shows More Prototype Hardware and Games! Genesis and 32X FPGA with Sega CD

When enough of you keep asking me the same questions I try to listen...and normally thats about MARS FPGA...but today its Neptune FPGA...a Brazilian developed Sega FPGA console; a new FPGA gaming device ala MiSTer FPGA that is promising a Sega 32X core along with Sega Genesis and Sega Master System! But is it real? Can they pull it off? What gaming hardware is it using? Because we already have up to the MiSTer FPGA Sega Saturn core working today...but the Gamers Care team have shown a Neptune FPGA prototype running games...so things are looking good! Could it be a MiSTer FPGA competitor? Perhaps!

and now we have even more prototype hardware on display and Neptune FPGA running more games...just like MiSTer FPGA cores!

But there are a ton of Genesis hidden gems and SOME 32X hidden gems so it would be fun to have another FPGA console on the market!

Questions? Comments? Just leave them below and I will do my best to answer each and every one of them!

They should secure an exclusive Hyperdimension Neptunia game for this thing. Nep nep! 😎

I totally get it, but it's funny the lengths some people will go to see their physical cartridges sticking out of a console.

Promising but we do need to see it running 32x cartridges.

Nice new update. I'm mixed on cartridge collecting (currently I only collect Evercade ones), especially when you can invest into an Everdrive to get that cartridge fix (most likely the ED is cheaper in the long run). It's good that there is a possibility of a new Sega FPGA console on the market, especially since Analogue stopped producing the MegaSG so those who missed out on that, this could appeal to.

I find this very interesting as someone who has a collection of Sega Genesis and Sega Mega Drive clone consoles from the early 90s from various countries that were 99% one-to-one replicas but may have a slight different color palette or slight different sound, maybe more bass or something like lower or higher pitch sound. I even have one that has a built-in scar converter. But when it comes to Sega, I prefer to play on my professional video monitor.

Now after I said all of that, the reason I said all that is to say that I am a Sega fan. But I also understand that this is to replicate what the Neptune was supposed to be, and I'm hoping that this is not an absolute one-to-one comparison. The reason I say that is that I've always been curious about what a 32x would have been if Sega had more time to push out all the features they wanted to with the system if it was slightly more powerful in some way.

I hope they release new games or at least 32x remade games. original Megadrive games with better brackgrounds and sound thanks to the 32X extra power.

The 32X is an odd one. It only has 40 games, and a lot of those are underwhelming. But then it has those awesome ports of Virtua Racing and Virtua Fighter, so I'll always love it.

This is very promising progress. I wonder tho what the 3.5mm light blue jack is for on that one board. Maybe an AV combo jack like earlier Raspberry Pis had?
Personally, I'm somewhere in the middle with having cartridge slots on FPGA devices. I have a bunch of those and I think it is very important for preservation to keep these around. On the other hand, if they have a SD Card slot on the final design, I'd probably also just load my games onto there and call it a day.
Especially games like the Fatal Fury homebrew port you showed yesterday would benefit from that. Btw, that one is amazing. Played it myself for a bit :)

What I really want to see is a Mega SD or Mega Everdrive Pro with the 32X FPGA included so I can have a Neptune Nomad.

It's mostly a replacement for my tower of power and it's mass of wires it's not a replacement for MiSTer fpga.
Neptune was always a dream

If this has analogue video output and compatibility with original controllers, I’ll be very interested in betting one. The other factor would be price.

I wonder if GAME GEAR games can run on it, likely needs an adapter.

Let’s be real here, if they have the Neptune shell this will cost a lot. 3D print is not good quality for the cost, and they ain’t gonna get an injection mould either. I’ll bet ya $50 this ain’t gonna have the Neptune shell for less than $500, if at all

I just don't have the slightest interest in physical media. For me it is about playing the games. My nostalgia get tickled by the sights and the sounds. As a kid I play games looking at the screen. Getting up to change a game was an annoyance, not part of the experience. I am happy to play on a modern flatscreen with a modern wireless controller. Cartridges and CDs are expensive and annoying.
