Pickpocket Trick: 3 Tips

Groups of women, guys or even children.
They are near you or they work together. Here is how it works: 1 bumps into you so you will look his/her way, and that is when one slices your bag or grabs your passport from your crossbody bag because they saw where you put it, and then he/she hands the passport to a cyclist or a runner.
‼️ What can tourists do? Leave passport and some money in the safe.
Protect them in a hidden money belt and do not reach for it in public.
Wear a lanyard under your shirt and do not reach for it in crowded public areas.
Be observant in crowded trains, buses, stairwells and streets.

+1 for hidden money belts! I've used one to carry my passport, a credit card and a little cash on all of my international trips. It feels so much safer than carrying all that in a shoulder bag that can be lost, grabbed or slashed.

I was almost pickpocketed in Paris, they were young girls, about 15-16 years old. One tried to reach into my purse, and the other touched my chest and said something in her own language which I couldn’t understand. Nothing was taken from me but those few minutes in the metro felt like forever. The girl who touched me on my chest had a very visible scar from the corner of her mouth to her ear. After they left the train, they stole another woman’s purse in the same train compartment but different door. It happened so fast! Everyone, it seemed to me, was complacent with the situation but one brave young man tried to detain one of them.

Just back from 2 weeks in Italy. Thanks for the advice. I had a money belt under my clothes that i safety pinned the zipper to my pants; a cross body purse that was under my armpit that i safety pinned the zippers closed that i kept a few euros in and a lanyard on my phone that was around my neck and arm. I was ready for them and had no issues. And i put holy cards in my pockets with notes on the back that said . Stealing is a sin! They didn't take them either😂

If I'm wearing a crossbody, I like to keep my hand on the bag/handle when I'm in an area I need to be vigilant. My mom also has a backpack that she can easily and comfortably carry on her front when traveling.
True story: I had someone distinctly run their hand on my back one time in Spain as my school group (visiting from America) was waiting to attend church. I had my bag under my jacket and my undershirt money bag under all my layers. I didn't acknowledge the rub but shortly after notified our chaperones. Gotta stay safe!

I agree! I was in Abbis Abbas, Ethiopia, a few years ago. I was almost pickpocketed by two Ethiopian men. One man worked as a vendor on the left side and asked me to buy their products, and on the right side, the guy tried to pickpocket my pocket. I quickly caught him on the right side, and I fought off his hand before he reached my pocket. They scared away, and I roughed them up. It happened twice in one day. Pickpocket usually worked with two or three people.

So true, 3 thieves distracted me in the front left then 2 thieves stole my purse in Toledo Spain, they targeted us for some time, so we should always alert our surroundings👀

My mum was on the metro in Paris and a man sitting beside her was 'reading' the newspaper and her bag was covered underneath. He stole her purse. She now always wears her bag underneath her jacket.

Excellent as always, Laurie. My passport always stays in the safe—it doesn’t go touring or shopping w/me. But I also have the Travelon bag you got to carry the mini umbrella, so slashing would take a great deal of effort!

My passport goes cross by under my clothes so they are literally under my arm pit. I keep $50 for spending money. I have other spending money hidden in another spot like in my socks. The passport must be protected. I take photos of my passport and make hard copies. I also take a certified birth certificate. Keep those in opposite locations. Leave my jewelry at home except for something inexpensive. You ideas have taught me well. I’m afraid to leave things in my hotel room. May at the desk if they have that service.

I also use a PacSafe purse. Plus I only keep a limited amount of cash in there. The money belt is a solid choice too.

Thank you for the info. I have the lanyard passport holder. I thought that I was supposed to wear it as a purse. Now I know to wear it under my shirt. I'll be traveling to Africa this weekend. Thanks for the helpful tips

In 1986 while with my boyfriend and a few friends (all who were men, ) were walking around the Red light area of Amsterdam in the evening. I had a crossbody bag over my jacket. Then I noticed three young men walking very close to my back as if they were part of our party of friends. I finally stopped unzipped my jacket put my purse under the jacket and zipped it back up and the men turned around and left. I also do not carry my credit card, passport or majority of money in my purse, but safely on my body or back in a safe in my hotel room.

It can happen and it does very quickly. The major tourist cities usually get roaming groups that love to travel during the heavy travel months. These groups steal then head back home after the season is over. A tour guide was telling me that is why he likes the off season. The laws are very lax in Europe for pick pockets.
