Battotai - Imperial Japanese Army March
"Battōtai" (抜刀隊, Drawn-Sword Regiment) is a Japanese gunka composed by Charles Leroux with lyrics by Toyama Masakazu in 1885. Upon the request of the Japanese government, Leroux adapted it along with another gunka, "Fusōka" (Song of Fusang), into the military march Rikugun bunretsu kōshinkyoku in 1912.
Recording made on August 8, 1939 by the Imperial Japanese Army Band conducted by Ōnuma Satoru
Lyrics:
We are the imperial army and Our enemies are
Forsaken by the heaven and earth — The Emperor's enemies
The enemy's commander is one who
through history has no equal — a hero
The soldiers who follow him are
United as fierce warriors ready to fight to the death
Kishin are put to shame by their courage
Heaven won't forgive their rebellion
They have rose up against us since olden times
But they have never had their moment of glory
Until the point our enemy is dead
Charge, charge, together as one
Glistening Like a broken jewel we draw our swords
Preparing ourselves for death we must charge
Our divine nation's ways and the samurai's
Bodies were defended by the spirits
Though threw them away after the restoration
Our Japanese swords now and again may be carried
Again our era and our reputation has returned
Enemy and ally together as one
Will die from the edge of the blade
To the one's with the Yamato-damashii
The time to die is now
Do not disgrace yourself with delay
Until the point our enemy is dead
Charge, charge, together as one
Glistening Like a broken jewel we draw our swords
Preparing ourselves for death we must charge
As soon as look to what's ahead there's a sword
To my right and to my left everyone has a sword
To climb a mountain of swords
Is a future thing I heard about doing
Seeing this world from the top with my own eyes
I climbed this mountain of swords
I achieved this, (not) for your crimes
Not for the sake of erasing them
But to subjugate the rebels for the welfare of all
And so the mountain of swords no longer matters
Until the point our enemy is dead
Charge, charge, together as one
Glistening Like a broken jewel we draw our swords
Preparing ourselves for death we must charge
The glistening of the light on a sword
I wonder if its from the gap in the clouds or the lightning
The voice of the artillery firing in all directions
I wonder if it is the roar of the thunder
The one's defeated by the enemy's blade
Or those struck by the enemy's rounds
Their life ended and their bodies without a grave
The corpses piled up into a mountain
Their blood streamed into a river
We go into certain death for the good of the emperor
Until the point our enemy is dead
Charge, charge, together as one
Glistening Like a broken jewel we draw our swords
Preparing ourselves for death we must charge
Even with a rain of bullets next to me
The body of which there isn't two without regret
Charges forward — myself, like the tempest's
Gusts that blow away the white dew
Without a grave, should I meet my end
For loyalty's sake I will have died
If it becomes that I die for that effect
Then to death I will hold no grudge
People who think they are me
Do not go back a step
Until the point our enemy is dead
Charge, charge, together as one
Glistening Like a broken jewel we draw our swords
Preparing ourselves for death we must charge
For me now and here
My body is to die
For the good of the emperor and the good of the country
The thing to discard is our lives
Even if
The corpses may rot
For their loyalty and composure their
Names to later generations with better lives
Will be passed down for a long time
By those who remain
As a warrior you were born
It's a life without use
And (you're) a dog without morality
Let nobody say that
That you are a coward
To be slandered as such
Until the point our enemy is dead
Charge, charge, together as one
Glistening Like a broken jewel we draw our swords
Preparing ourselves for death we must charge
