Jugend erwach! (Wake up, youth) also often referred to as Bau auf, bau auf, bau auf, Freie Deutsche Jugend, bau auf, after the first lines of the chorus, was the association song of the East German youth organization Freie Deutsche Jugend.

The lyrics and music of the song, which has a clear and cheerful reconstruction theme, are by the German composer and lyricist Reinhold Limberg (1927-1997). The song thematizes the cheerfulness of youth who - after the Grausame Night - are again building in sunshine and prosperity on a new future. The song also has a clear Marxist-Leninist slant (Arbeit und Brot boneden die Not, / die Kette der Knechtschaft zerbricht). Jugend erwach! was always sung at festivities of the association and on the heyday of the GDR. For the last time this was the case during the military parade to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the republic, on October 7, 1989. More than a month later the Wall fell and the end of the GDR seemed in sight.
