EU leaders pick Ursula von der Leyen for second term as bloc's president

European Union leaders have nominated Ursula von der Leyen for a second term as president of the bloc’s executive arm amid opposition from Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. At the first day of the leaders' summit, a range of issues were discussed, including the Middle East, security and defence and the strategic direction of the European Union for the next five years. CNA's Alex Cadier tells us what transpired as bloc leaders met in Brussels for the crucial summit.

Italy abstained, Hungary opposes.
Meloni expressed her dissatisfaction before the vote on the 27th, because the appointment of the position was proposed at a private meeting of six EU leaders last week.

She said the appointment process "was wrong in both its methods and content. Out of respect for the citizens and the will they showed in the elections, I decided not to support it. We will continue to work to finally give Italy the role it deserves in Europe portion size".
