Understanding Chinese Nationalism: Historical Memory in Chinese Politics and Foreign Relations

How did the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) not only survive but also regain the support of many Chinese citizens after the Tiananmen Square crackdown of 1989? Why has popular domestic sentiment turned toward anti-Western nationalism despite the anti-dictatorship democratic movements of the 1980s? Why is there a higher possibility that the new Beijing leadership will adopt a more nationalistic foreign policy in response to domestic nationalism in spite of China benefiting most from globalization?

Critically important video. As Sino-American tensions rise to levels not seen since 1950, it is important for Americans to understand how the Chinese public and Chinese statesmen think. The way they think when it comes to world affairs is unsurprisingly informed by modern Chinese history, starting with the Opium Wars and the Century of National Humiliation. If we want to understand where China is coming from rather than simply caricaturing China and its political leadership (though we Americans like "moral clarity" even when said clarity comes at the expense of "factual accuracy") we need to understand the basic framework of Chinese nationalism, which is a product of modern Chinese history.

@The505Guys Tibetan is one of 56 ethic groups in china. Tibet has been a part of china from 14 century, read some history books in a public library, and you will get it. If Tibet should be separated from china, then USA should leave their country, and give back the land to Hawaii native people and Indians

This kind of nationalism is everywhere, for example, South Koreans are even more nationalistic than China (they even cut off their fingers in protest of some Japan) and won't accept foreigners' criticism of them (especially from the Japanese); however, it is China that attracts the most attention and criticism.
