OSCAR WINNER:Best PictureBest DirectorBest Actor - Fredric MarchBest Supporting Actor - Harold RussellBest ScreenplayBest EditingBest ScoreIt's the hope that sustains the spirit of every GI: the dream of the day when he will finally return home. For three WWII veterans, the day has arrived. But for each man, the dream is about to become a nightmare. Captain Fred Derry (Dana Andrews) is returning to a loveless marriage; Sergeant Al Stephenson (Fredric March) is a stranger to a family that's grown up without him; and young sailor Homer Parrish (Harold Russell) is tormented by the loss of his hands. Can these three men find the courage to rebuild their world? Or are the best years of their lives a thing of the past? Featuring a brilliant cast that includes Myrna Loy and Virginia Mayo, The Best Years of Our Lives garnered seven Oscars, including "Best Picture." Heart-wrenching, touching and "filled with emotional dynamite" (The Hollywood Reporter), it remains "one of the best films about war veterans ever made" (American Movie Classics).

One of the most moving depictions of sensitive compassion in cinema. I fell in love with Teresa Wright with this movie--and probably with this scene.

This is when Peggy really fell in love with Fred. The way she conforts him is like a mother to her child. All the actors in this film deserved an Oscar..(and I mean ALL).

How was Dana Andrews not nominated for an Oscar for this. His acting here is incredible. Personally I would have nominated him for Best Actor instead of Frederic March, no offense to March he was great, but I found that his role was more supporting than leading. Dana Andrews was clearly the lead in this movie.

Poor Fred. And his goofball wife Marie tells him, "The war is over Fred, just snap out of it!" Yeah right...If only it were that simple. He found a gem in Peggy though.

Is this from some sort of extended edition? I’ve seen the movie multiple times, and this part isn’t in it
