My grandpa was a Soviet truck driver. Drove all of the Soviet semi-trucks during his career, loved Kamaz, despised Maz, hated Kolhida. And had usually 200-600 litres of gasoline in his garage as reserve for personal use for his Zhiguli/Lada 03 and to trade for services and goods. Like my dad put it: as soon as I married your mom I did not had to worry about buying gasoline for our Zhiguli/Lada 011, I always had an extra 40 litre full canister in trunk.

a russian guy i know told me that semi trucks were not as common in the soviet union because most of the freight was not palletized, it was loaded and unloaded one crate at a time by hand, and most of the long-distance freight moved by train, not truck.

I love hearing the story about your family moving using the bus. Your story telling makes me picture everything perfectly in my mind and it makes me smile. Thank you for telling your stories, they are very enjoyable. 🍻

The Gaz trucks were based on a American Studebaker that was sent over land lease during the Great Patriotic war. They also sent Dodge trucks over and I think they took the combination of the Dodge engine and the Studebaker cab and Chassis to make the Gaz and it was built for a long time.

Back when I was a small child in late 90's Vietnam, most popular trucks on the city roads were either Zil 130's or IFA. The sheer number imported mean more parts to be cannibalize and thus lasted longer. These trucks was responsible for building back the shabby "postwar" country and were cheap and simple enough to hold us till we got capital for bigger and better things.

I am a truck driver in Canada and I don't think I've clicked on a video faster in my fucking life. Your content is so fascinating.

This is interesting - in Estonia I used to write down passing trucks and cars registration numbers as well. I think it was around 1983-1984 when I was not in school yet... Had to wait siting on the fence post until next car or truck arrived - trafic was not very busy at this time in my area.... :) Remember also movie The Convoy. As a kid, it left me strong feeling. I was lucky to see it twice. In my small down mostly every movie was shown once normally... There wheren`t many American movies in the Cinemas at the time.

Sergei, my cousin Chris, who lives in Rice Lake, Wisconsin, was a long distance truck driver who owned his own rig, a Peterbilt. He drove for 12 years from the age of 21 until he was 33. He had just bought a mid-sized farm but the reason he quit was because he got robbed while sleeping in his bed behind the seating area. Someone busted the window with a gun and stuck it in his face. Luckily he wasn't carrying that much money and they didn't want the checkbook, debit, or credit card. I do have a good memory though which entailed him taking my dad, little brother, and me down I-90 in Illinois on a 3 hour drive where we ended up stopping to eat at a truck-stop diner that had a great buffet. That is a memory I'll forever treasure.

That Dodge strait 6 is still viable today!
In 2010 I hauled alot of scrap iron to the scrapyard, and it was all straight 6 and strait 8 engines and cast iron transmissions.
I think a moonshiner could do well for himself in a village in the USSR, especially if he had friends on a collective farm.👍😎🇺🇦🇺🇸

I would love to see a video about the fire trucks and fire fighters in the Soviet Union. I’m a former volunteer fire fighter in the US and have always wondered what it was like for them and how it differs. Great video as always though! Keep up the great work

The Dodge(Chrysler) inline "slant 6" was one of the best engines ever made, IMO, and the opinion of many others who remember them. I think there was a 2.8(170 cu in) and a 3.7(225 cu in). Many folks feel the same way about the Ford 300 cu in(4.9 L) "straight 6". That engine was so good. It had lots of torque, and would go for hundreds of thousands of miles, if maintained properly. You just had to keep an eye on the head gasket when the miles got up there. Ford offered them for several decades, and people loved them. Come to think of it, ALL of the American inline 6 cylinders were pretty great workhorses.
