Why I Love Woodchip Paths

Wonderfully crumbly, earthy-smelling woodchips make the most superb garden paths. Just one of the reasons I love them.

Woodchips is the way to go!! I put cardboard down 3 years ago from a furniture store that saved it for me. Then got free Woodchips from local tree service. I put down atleast 12 inches. Then built my raised beds on top. Alot of work but so worth it. Going on my 4th year now and no weeds!

I’ve been going every afternoon to our municipal building to get a few containers of free wood chips at a time…slowly turning our boring lawn into raised beds and wood chip paths!

Freebies from my local tree guys has saved me so much in cash they give it away and are happy to do so, I'm the only person at our allotment with wood chip paths and I know their my plots but they look the tidiest lol

I was taking a stroll on my local woods the other day and there was a MOUNTAIN of wood chip. Mustbe been dumped there. Couldn't quite believe it. If I had a van, a wheel barrow and time, I'd absolutely take some

We get 22 yards of arborist wood chips for free at least once a year from our municipal crews. We've seen some amazing recoveries in plants that were struggling that now have a lovely wood chip blanket around them. As you said, the worms love them too!

I use wood chips and autumn leaves. It makes fantastic compost under the path layers. Each time I do new plantings, I use my pathway compost and replace the woodchips and leaves.

I’m thinking of trying creeping thyme paths. Maybe it will work, maybe it will get smushed, maybe only some of it will grow, but technically you can step on it and it will help with pollinators! 😁

Doesn’t work in North Carolina. I have tried so many different things: cardboard, weed barrier, etc.. Weeds are ultra prolific and new ones pop up each year worse than the previous year. Weeds love wood chips, the seeds land on top and grow into that wonderful earthworm filled soil under. The only that works here is grass clippings or pine straw and they both have to be thick. Pine straw looks good in a garden for a year and you have to refresh. Weeds do grow in areas around plants and along the edges.

I'd totally agree. But don't use woodchip near strawberries - the wood lice which live in the chip love to eat them !

Why stop at your path? You can put them on top of all your beds and it stops slugs often and mimics nature. So, also cuts down the need to water your plants so much as helps to keep the soil below moist .

Chip drop is a great resource in the U.S.

Doesn’t the cardboard rot then weeds just grow through that ? Would putting weed suppressor material be best, or maybe both asking as need to do this round my raised beds and want to make sure I’m doing it right 😂

I'm interested (too) in your raised beds with metal corners. Where did you purchase them?

I wish I could even afford enough to use as mulch in my garden

I discovered that buying bags of woodchips from Lidl actually worked out cheaper than bulk bags.
