Donald Trump expressed strong criticism and frustration after an appeals court rejected his claim of presidential immunity, calling the ruling a "nation-destroying" decision. The former president took to Truth Social on Tuesday to voice his discontent, labeling the ruling as detrimental to the presidency and the country's well-being. Trump reiterated his unfounded assertion that the criminal charges against him were a "political weapon" orchestrated by President Joe Biden.

In his post, Trump argued for the necessity of full presidential immunity, stating that it is crucial for a president to function effectively in serving the country's interests. He warned that if the decision stands, it could significantly harm not only the presidency but also the vitality, essence, and success of the nation. Trump claimed that such a ruling would instill fear in future presidents, hindering them from taking necessary actions due to the fear of retaliatory measures from the opposing party after leaving office. Drawing from his personal experience, Trump asserted that this situation could turn presidential immunity into a political weapon, leading to interference in elections and posing a severe threat to the nation.

The US District Court of Appeals in Washington DC had delivered the ruling earlier, stating that Trump does not enjoy immunity from prosecution for alleged crimes committed during his tenure in office. The court emphasized that, for the purposes of the criminal case, Trump had transitioned from being President to a private citizen, with the same legal defenses as any other individual facing criminal charges. The ruling explicitly declared that any executive immunity that may have shielded Trump during his presidency no longer applies to the current prosecution.

Trump's legal team had contended that actions taken during his presidency should be covered by presidential immunity, forming a crucial part of his defense against the charges related to attempts to overturn the 2020 election results.
