Dear Linus...You're Wrong About the Apple M1

Linus, I love you but...You jumped the gun on Apple's new M1 silicon chip and the new MacBook Air, MacBook Pro and Mac mini. Let me explain.

The irony of someone making a video criticizing a reviewer for being skeptical before actually testing the product, while in the same breath praising the product before actually testing it.

The video at the start comparing the phone to the iMac isn't an apples to apples comparison. The phone has dedicated hardware for HEVC and the iMac doesn't, and you can see that it makes a significant difference. What the video shows is the difference between hardware accretion or none. Yes, the new M1 chips will be fast, but that comparison is just misleading. Drop a LUT on the clip and do it again, or use H264 (which are both accelerated) and you will start to see some fairer comparisons.

Your encoding test is called hardware acceleration. They already have developed a fast h265 encoder specifically for their phones when they need to record in 4k hdr. Hardware acceleration is really good but it really shows it's limits.

Linus _is_ a very skeptical person though, in case anyone forgot. The bigger the claim, the more skeptical he would be, and like any hardware enthusiast he _hates_ marketing with a passion.

I myself am still very skeptical, I will reserve my judgement until it is out. It could be legit, it could be not. While you have a point with the numbers, it would be remiss to ignore how vague Apple's presentation had been. I don't think it is a smart purchase regardless until 2 years once the platform is proven, but I do hope it is a good first gen because for some reason no one else have done ARM Laptop right - hope this is the kick needed to wake people up on ARM Laptop development.

Clickbait title, unfounded accusation. I watched the LTT video for the first time after this. He has made no claims. All he did was to just cast doubt on the vague numbers Apple has provided. There is nothing to be wrong about because he made no claims. How about less fanboyism on your part and more facts and hard numbers? We all want Apple to push the industry forward and be disruptive but people like you give them less incentive to do so because you drool over anything and everything they release, no matter how crap or good it is.

"in 6 months it's going to get better automatically" - If MKBHD has taught me anything it's this: NEVER buy a product based on future software promises. Buy it for what it is now. As it is, we don't know the real world performance of AS Macs. If you're ok with that, buy one. Otherwise, wait until people have actually got their hands on one.

It's just about hardware acceleration... The imac does not support HEVC 10bit HDR encoding, thus has to use the cpu. Next gen gpus are going to support it.
If you tried to run a non native codec on your iphone, it would really choke.

I don’t understand what Linus said in his video that was wrong? He never even said the M1 soc would be bad, he’s merely stating Apple was vague about specs and performance - because it was. It sounds like you only read the title and watched the first 10 seconds of his video.
