I have started 1 book of 4. And I really loved it just from 1 page. The language is perfect.

Iv'e read a lot of reviews and it seems people appear to be divided about which is the best Novel in the series. In the more traditional third person narrative of this novel there is room for incredibly memorable images summoned up by Durrell's pen, , , - Narouz on the balcony slicing bats out of the evening sky and also Memlik Pasha discussing with his Italian barber the best way to satisfy the British and also continue bleeding Nessim's family of antique Korans, bookmarked with bribes .Nobody is untainted by the city and the time in fact the rich melodious prose seems to contrast with the unflinching eye that Durrell rests on his characters especially Mountolive in that unsettling meeting with Leila in the carrige .
