LIVE: Donald Trump announces $500 billion for US infrastructure

President Trump has announced fresh investment worth hundreds of billions of dollars in America’s artificial intelligence infrastructure.

The funding, which could climb to $500 billion, will be part of a joint venture with some of the world’s biggest technology investors, including OpenAI and Oracle.

Sam Altman, OpenAI’s chief executive, and Larry Ellison, the chairman of Oracle, took part in a White House announcement on Tuesday evening, Trump’s first full day back in office.

The new venture, to be called Stargate, will initially receive $100 billion to build an AI data centre. SoftBank, a Japanese investment firm, is also part of the Texas-based project.

“This is money that would normally have gone to China,” Trump said. “We will invest $500 billion, at least, in AI infrastructure in the United States.
