When I took my wife to our local shop to pick out her carry gun she was nervous. She had never bought a firearm before but has plenty of trigger time with most of my collection. When the assistant found out it was her first time and her EDC he layed out sample of everything from derringers to 1911's. He asked what she liked and didn't like while pointing out features of them all. When she decided on a 1911 the process repeated with almost every one they had in the store until she found the one she fell in love with. When she saw the price of her choice (Kimber Crimson Carry) she insisted that she would settle for something cheaper. Then he told her a line I will never forget, "If that is the one you are most comfortable with, that is the gun you trust your life to, no price is too much for that."

The next time a first time buyer asks me about buying a gun, I'm sending them this video. I 100% agree with everything you said. Long time sub and happy to see the success you've had. Keep doing what you're doing.

When I first got started in this CCW life years ago, I initially got sucked into the, "Oh, you got to get a this or a that gun" from others based upon their personal opinions and biases for or against specific gun brands. I spent big money chasing what other people thought was the greatest piece to have until I finally decided to go after what I prefered, liked and what worked well for me! Once I eliminated all of the foolishness, I found my own niche. Like Colion said; "It's a journey!" My journey brought me to a specific brand that I absolutely love and carry with extreme confidence to defend myself and my loved ones. Since, then; I've determined that not only are guns a personal choice and selection and that this gun world of ours isn't a one size fits all, but also that; "You don't choose a gun; it chooses you!" Keep your piece in order to keep the peace!

Your first firearm should always be a Ruger Alaskan with a 2" barrel chambered in .500 S&W Magnum.

I work in a gun store and you are spot on. I will take as much time as is necessary to ensure a first time buyer is comfortable with the firearm they purchase. We also have a range and customers can rent the type of firearm they intend to purchase.

this advice couldn't come at a better time. A friend of mine is looking at purchasing a firearm for concealed carry this weekend and asked for advice. I said something similar but I think I can lay out a plan to help him work through his initial impressions and work towards the right choice. love your shows! Keep killing it!

It's true that tastes change!!! I started with an M9, then sold it and went glock crazy, then sold most of my glocks for an M9A1 and a 1911, and now I just branched off into a S&W Shield...

Spent the last 5 months doing exactly this. I would go with 1 or 2 friends, and we'd all rent a gun and swap them out, I fired at least 20 guns, and ended up settling on the Sig p229 Legion. I am supremely satisfied, and very happy that I didn't just buy the first gun the internet told me to buy.

I started out with a Colt 1911 MkIV Series 80 .45 ACP when I was 18. My second gun was a Colt Anaconda.44 Magnum. I used it for whitetail deer hunting. After a couple years, I became a GLOCK fanboy. Then Sig Sauer, HK, etc. Now after many years of carrying daily, I have come back to the 1911's and Sig P series. Colion is right. Your tastes will change as you gain experience over time.

I really love your channel! You're amazing at articulating the best message that people need to hear from someone with your experience. I loved the review you did on the Sig P229 Legion. I've been wanting it for a while now. Keep up the amazing work!!

This is 100% accurate. It is really about personal preference in about every way. From how you grip the gun, to recoil, to the weight of the gun... ect. Always practice safety.

Another thing that may be useful to understand for new gun buyers: It's not gonna be cheap. Prepare to spend at least $400-500 for a quality handgun. There are a few good ones for cheaper. But be ready to spend some dough. Plus magazines, holsters, ammo. The price goes up from there. I talked to a security guard once who wanted to get certified to carry and he was gonna buy a Hi-Point. I tried my best to talk him out of it (I'm not an employee at a gun shop, it was just a casual conversation), but he just didn't want to spend the money on a Ruger or Glock. Spend the extra cash, people. Your life is worth it.

To add to what was just stated, My first was the Beretta model 96 .40. How I arrived there was through hands on Ruger, Colt, Taurus, and Glock. Everything from cylinder to mag feed. From compact to full size. Let's just say there's a reason why there are so many different brands as well as styles of hand guns. I found the 96 fit me the best to my hand, and my style.
Then, I grew a little, and time went on, and I wanted something a little less conspicuous that had the same reliability, and accuracy. Once again, tried out all the brands, all the semi auto hammer styles, as that is what I am now accustomed to, and love the DSA. Once again, no matter how far away from it I got as I looked at different things, Beretta got me again with the compact PX4 in 9mm.
Now, a few more years go by, and I had to sell both of my guns for personal reasons. It would be two years before walking back into a store, and this time I know exactly what I want. I pick up the PX4 FS 9mm. I call it the child of the guns I had to sell. But I tell you what, this time, there is only one way I'm getting rid of my 30' nail driver.
Point of the story, go through the process, change your mind, change it again, and eventually you will find what works best for you. On the same note, please, don't go bashing another person's choice just because, and don't let them bash yours. You found what is best for you, and they found what is best for them. Now, granted, there is some leeway when it comes to Hi-Point, but still, play nice.

I don't understand thumbs downing this video. That was great advice for shopping for any major purchase.
