To be fair, she isn't being obnoxious about some stupid conspiracy. She just doesn't understand the physics of it and admits she is 100% of her conclusion.

Admitting what you don't understand, and asking why, is a sign of intelligence.

This young woman is *thinking* about physics and trying to understand. She's identified her limited understanding, and she's literally asking for help: "Tell me. Tell me why it's not." Kudos to Dan for not being rude and for providing a great visual.

She asked honestly and he answered honestly and understandably! Both deserve respect!

This is a perfectly reasonable misunderstanding and an excellent explanation. Good job.

Remember how in a car crash all objects fly forward? But when you're in a car, you can throw a ball up and down.

I always use the example of being in a vehicle and you're hold a ball. If you throw the ball up into the air, it doesn't suddenly fly into the back seat. No, it comes right back down into your hand. Why? Because everything in the vehicle is traveling at the same speed as the vehicle and therefore, regardless of the fact that the ball isn't touching anything for that period of time that it is in the air, it still maintains the forward momentum of the vehicle.

I give her alot of credit for being honest, admitting that she doesn't know and genuinely asks for help explaining so she can understand.

That video is an incredible demonstration. She's not off base for asking and trying to think thru this. And you're so right, it's so much easier to understand with a visual and not words. ⭐️

I think it shows her intelligence rather than lack of, for even thinking of the problem she never understood

Good on her for asking the question. More people need to ask questions like this and there should be no fear of looking foolish. It's always a good day to learn something new :)

Oh my gosh someone with an actually normal and honest physics question, this is huge for this channel

Good on her for asking "Why doesn't it work this way?" Instead of just asserting that it doesn't work that way.

for this sort of misconception, I like to point out that the earth is moving, yet we stay in the same place when we jump. it's one of the few visualizations that help me remember how momentum works.

Worth pointing out that, given enough air time, eventually you _would_ slow down relative to the platform where you started because of wind resistance. But because there's not _much_ resistance you don't see a difference over just a few seconds. Given enough time you'd eventually be falling straight down relative to the Earth instead of your starting point

A lot of people forget that you are also moving the same speed as the object you are on. If you are in a car going 60 mph you are also going 60 mph. The vehicle is the accelerator to make your entire body move fast. So when she jumps she still has that forward speed she had while on the ship meaning she is moving fast in two directions at the same time.

It’s nice to hear humbleness and a polite response on the internet. Who would have thought?

"A crisis of physics." I'm using that the next time I drop a mug, prang my car or accidentally leave lower Earth orbit.

That dude on the trampoline is living his full life

While the trampoline video does a great demonstration, I think an explanation too would actually help more for true understanding and not just knowing.

She starts moving at the same speed as the boat. When she jumps, the only forces acting on her are gravity down and a bit of wind resistance (in the opposite direction of the boat). So as long as the wind resistance is small enough and doesn’t have too much time to act on her, there is nothing stopping her from going essentially the same speed of the boat as she falls.
