TINA TURNER Nutbush City Limits

I couldn't resist the urge to post a version of this classic in the wake of the death of the iconic singer Tina Turner. I had no idea that the 'Nutbush' dance was an Australian innovation! I thought it was originated by Tina herself but not so. Here are just portions of three clips I have borrowed from youtubers celebrating and performing the hit song 'Nutbush City Limits'. Just shy of 50 years ago (i know, half a century), the track by Ike & Tina Turner and written by Tina herself, was issued. It was a moderate hit in America; but only scraped into the Aussie chart in the December of 1973 peaking at #87.

But for some reason 18 months later, 'Nutbush City Limits began another ascent on the Australian charts and it would peak at #27. In my memories it was a much bigger hit, but perhaps it was the sheer vocal power or the airplay it received that made me sit up and take notice. I heard nothing further from Tina Turner until 1984, as most of the world had forgotten about her, but that wouldn't ever be the case again and her comeback was of epic proportions.

The death of Tina Turner this week (May 24, 2023) at the age of 83 has been another sober reminder that no-one lives forever but legends like this woman and her music will shine on and rock on until the end of time.

Wait, what?!? So this is just an Australian thing?? Until this minute I thought everyone in the world knew the Nutbush dance. How did I get to my mid-50s and not know it’s just us?! Hahaha!!😂

omg I am so out of touch... I had no idea this was a thing! A few years back I walked into a primary school where we rented a room to teach night classes to see the "school disco" in the hall... they were playing Nutbush and the kids were going wild. I was so surprised and happy. This is Tina of my childhood! But there's a dance and they all know it and love it! How awesome!

I’m in Sydney! My sister and I danced to this track many times on Friday night! I would love to be part of the group! Pity you aren’t in Sydney!!

I never knew this was taught in Aussie schools, my school days were before 1984 (when Tina put out "Nutbush City Limits".) But somehow I already know how to do this dance. i must havee picke dit up at weddings and christenings . It certainly is a national staple, like the "Chicken Dance". So fun to see it happening in different places, like the last example in front of The Opera House.
