Wood Burning a Sign With Ammonium Chloride - Fail

#woodworking, #woodburning, Here's my first attempt at burning a sign using ammonium chloride. Eventually I'll get it because it's a great method. Let me know what I did wrong and don't forget to subscribe, it'll help me out, thanks.

I just did a cutting board and it turned out great :) I sanded it, stuck a vinyl stencil on it, lightly painted the solution on, let it dry and hit it with the heat gun. I didn't even set of the smoke alarm ;) I used 1/2 cup of warm water, 5 tsp of Thick It and 1 tbsp of ammonium chloride. Go check out either the King of Random or Mr. Crafty Pants for some tips. I know Laura Kampf did it, but I feel like theirs did better with the thicker solution. And you definitely want to sand the wood until it's very smooth to cut down on bleeding and to be sure you get an even burn :)

Need to use thick it and ammonium chloride to make a gel. It won’t run and spread out.

You forgot to make gravy first, just mix up some cornstarch and water heat slowly and stir till it gets to a gel consistency (thick gravy) mix acid in slowly let cool in small glass jar and its rdy to use

You need to add a food grade thickener. This will hold your solution in place.

Can I use cornstarch i stead of thick it?

Sand the wood down to a smoother surface.

You can cut out your stencil and spray varnish on, peel off letters and paint solution on. It won’t burn on varnished surface. As others said sand smooth and you can use thickener.

I use thick it, to mix with the that. And way easier if you have a Cricut to make a stencil.

To transfer get carbon transfer paper, put black side onto wood than paper you are doing tracing over it, than trace, use tape to hold in place. Than to burn use pyro pen or wood burning pen

Food starch for thickerner? Or some type of thickener, precut “stencils” are nice to use. And I would “sand” the wood first to a smooth or semi smooth touch.🤗

Stencils are great as well. Than use a polythene chemical spray once your are done or wood stain

Try using 8 small scoops of thick it and stencil let dry and peel the stencil then use heat gun. Works for me everytime

a 2x4 is not the right choice for a sign, way to rough to get a good resolution.

Smoother the better, and you made the solution way to concentrated. Check Laura Kampf video and TKRs video on the subject, you need like a teaspoon in one cup of water. And you might be able to use isopropyl alcohol to make the solution evaporate faster after its on the wood.

Use some thick it...it will make it like a gel and it won’t run all over the place. I also use a cricut and cut a stencil, way easier.

Yeah a bunch of people said sand it or run it through a planer.
