We had an untrained BC he was abused by a farmer because at 6 weeks old he would not ly down and stay. I had helped train BCs one summer for a dairy farm and a golf course. Within 6 weeks, so 12 weeks old, if anyone went across the road he would gentle bring them back. The neighbors down the road had toddlers and let them run wild but he never let them cross the road. I can honestly say he would die for anyone who lived in our little group. He died of a stroke at 20 years old about 10 years ago, I miss him every day.

My ex mother in law had a border collie. When my son was a new born we lad him on the blanket on the living room floor. My mother in law told the dog "You're in charge watch the baby." We went into the kitchen about an hour later the baby started crying. The dog wouldn't let me near my son. She started growling at me and put herself between me and my son. I told my mother in law that Maggie was protecting my son. The moment she said to Maggie "It's okay that's her baby the dog started waging her tail and being friendly.

An extremely intelligent dog also, being extremely obedient, seems rare to me. I have one very smart, pitbull, not as smart as my border collie, but still very smart, and she uses it to think for herself, and her obedience is limited to deciding whether my command suits her prerogative, and her ultimate goal is just to outsmart me for her personal freedom.
