The Federation, Starfleet and United Earth

United Federation of Planets, the UE, Starfleet, the Federation Charter and Starfleet law, it's a confusing mess of policy in the diplomatic relations of the Alpha Quadrant.
So hopefully this video will help clarify the differences between the terms and organisations.

This is Part One of a Starfleet series I'm working on exploring the different aspects of the Federation.

Fun Fact: Very early in TOS, there is a reference to Starfleet being under the auspices of the “United Earth Space Probe Agency”. This later became the Federation, and that agency was never mentioned again.

Ok, just a nitpick here: The United Federation of Planets is abbreviated as UFP, not UFoP.

Prepositions such as "of" are generally not included in abbreviations of proper nouns. But more importantly, the "o" is completely omitted in Alpha canon and all near-Alpha canon sources (such as the technical manuals).

Thanks for this! As a Canadian I get super annoyed when the UFP isn't thought of as a federation of members, but as a body ruled and dominated by Earth. I always found this a very American-style type of thinking about cooperation. Present analogies would be equating England with the UK (dismissing, Scotland, N Ireland, etc); or New York with America (dismissing 49 other states).

I'm just gonna point out Vulcan and Andoria still kept their fleets. A Mirror Darkly dossier on Archer shows he is an honorary member of Starfleet. Archer rummaging through Daniel's database showed a 31st century version of a Vulcan cruiser. There is Vulcan science vessel in DS9. In Discovery Michael Burnham was supposed to join the Vulcan Expedionary Group upon graduation but racism within the Vulcan Science Academy prevented that as they want only one of Sarek's children. We all know Spock rejected joining the Vulcan Science Academy. In the Kelvin timeline it was over insulting his mother.
So Earth Starfleet got federalized into Federation Starfleet and as a consequence kept United Earth's anti-Human Augment policies. As seen in TNG on a Federation outpost it is legal to do genetic enhancement of children.

Can we talk for a second about the Star Trek Fleet Command advert or whatever tf that mobile game was?

“How to dominate the galaxy in three easy steps! Step 1: Choose Kirk as your captain.”

I paused the ad right there.

(a) The Federation doesn’t dominate ANYONE. We’re well past the desire to dominate.

(b) Kirk would NOT support someone’s plan for “domination.” The man embodies the ideals of the Federation: egalitarian, peace-minded, force only to stabilize a situation and resume talks, help thine enemy and they may become a friend. He wanted to rescue the Warbird’s crew in Balance of Power.

The Federation has lasted this long partially because it doesn’t dominate or go to war over a misunderstanding, even a violent one. It seeks to talk and understand, firing weapons only if the other side has no interest in diplomacy — and then renewing talks once they are.

Ads like that are why we’re nowhere near ready for a post-scarcity utopia. We’d form the Terran Empire.
