Hi. I'm a housekeeper, and I can explain the damage: Aluminum is NOT resistant to highly alkaline/acidic cleaners. Since highly alkaline cleaners are often used in the kitchen to remove grease, damage occurs.
In both cases, the aluminum oxide layer is destroyed, causing the aluminum to oxidize (rust).
