I can only imagine the chaos on set between Kinski and the director Herzog, but they still created a masterpiece!

Herzog said that one of the Native Chiefs in all seriousness asked him if he wanted Kinski killed, Herzog declined the offer, because he needed the actor to finish the film.

This is the first film I watched and had a real sense of wonder and a feeling of " what did I just experience " I was 10 years old.
I'm 42 years old now and it holds the same wonderful joy as before.
It was the film that really turned me on to films generally and by god have I seen some shameful crap and some truly amazing films, this of course stands out from the norm and one of the best things about this it will NEVER get a remake!!! Hooray! It took extraordinary people to create this masterpiece and I for one take my hat off to you all and thank you.

What a good movie this was. Claudia Cardinale was 45 years old and looked sensational. Kinski was just excellent in this part. What Herzog went through to complete the film was amazing.

The Greatest Film of All Time and to watch it on the big screen last night in London was an all time great experience.

I've seen Fitzcarraldo a few times. The other day I watched it and realized what a masterpiece it is. This movie is major undertaking. Other than say, Apocalypse Now, there is nothing really like it. KInski and Cardinale have a real chemistry. The ship's captain and boatmates were perfect too.

"The film had a troubled production...Herzog had his crew attempt to manually haul the 320-ton steamship up a steep hill, leading to three injuries. The film's original star Jason Robards became sick halfway through filming, so Herzog hired Kinski, with whom he had previously clashed violently during productions...Their fourth partnership fared no better. When shooting was nearly complete, the chief of the Machiguenga tribe who were used extensively as extras, asked Herzog if they should kill Kinski for him. Herzog declined."

Mick Jagger was in the cast and actually mucked in but after constant rain, mud and a stomach bug he hopped on a plane and got out of there and got back on the European leg of the Stones tour of 1982!

When people talk about Kinski, the topic is usually his insanity, but man what an actor. His Fitzcarraldo is borderline Oscar worthy.

And i truly want to be like him, a man of action, who would do anything for what he loves. A life defined as passion, madness and guts.

I heard about this film back when Siskel and Ebert reviewed it all those years ago. A couple of years ago I finally got around to picking up a copy. Wow, what a great film. Just loaned it a friend that had never heard of it. He thinks it a great film too. I need to see Burden of Dreams, the documentary of the making of Fitz. I understand it is just as good. With all the superhero comic book crap that now passes for cinema, I may never go to a theater again. I’ll just watch these classics.

Uma metáfora da modernidade, com suas façanhas e maldades, meu avô amava esse filme, deixou o VHS separado pra eu ver tanto tempo, eu só vi depois que ele faleceu... ja faz tanto tempo.. viver é ter saudade..
metaphor of modernity, with its virtues and evilness, my granddad loved this movie, he left the VHS for me to see, i would only watch the movie after he died. So long ago... to live is to have "saudade"

That "driting into the Pongo" scene was absolutely heartbreaking.
