When I was a little girl, I saw Shirley Temple at an award show. I got up the nerve to approach her and ask for an autograph. Before I knew what was happening, security came out of everywhere. As they were trying to hustle me away from her, she told them to stop and that I was with her. After she got rid of them, she told me to walk with her to her seat. During our walk we had a lovely conversation. Once at her seat, she asked if I had a pen and then gave me the most beautiful autograph. That day, at The Black Film Makers Hall of Fame, Shirley Temple made a little black girl from Oakland California, blissfully happy. 💙

My grandma who grew up in the same generation(the silent generation) as Shirley Temple kept it real with me and said “things are not what they seem. Look at all these men gawking at her and fondling her. Everything that glitters isn’t gold.” That always stuck with me. I’m glad Shirley Temple was able to break away from the shackles of Hollywood.
