Being further into this hobby now I feel like it would be good for me to try some older games. Games that have really been the jump off point for all the games we have today. Robinson Crusoe has become one of my forever games. It was love at first sight. Each scenario is based off classical novel or film which allowed me to live some beloved reads. The base game comes with 7 scenarios, each which play differently (one you are tasked with catching King Kong).

You will love it.

Hanamikoji is good !!! One of the early games I purchased when I was starting out in board games and it remains one of my favorites !!!!

Crusoe is BRUTAL, but a permanent Top 10'er for me... Tells a vivid story through gameplay alone... Mainly a solo game. Seems a bit easier at 2-3, but suffers from major quarterbacking...
Buy it,
solo it,
LOVE IT.

Ignacy does talk really fast haha. His usual intro in videos or podcasts is something like "Hello hello this is Ignacy Trzewiczek from Portal Games" and it comes out like 🤣😂 I love it, he is a great personality in this hobby

Fresco painting is a technique in which color is applied to still-wet plaster. I think the purpose is permanence - color might fade, but so long as the wall itself is intact, the painting will not flake off. It is my understanding that a lot of the skill involves being able to work quickly before the plaster dries.

Hanamokoji is a game of I-split-you-choose, so the game part of it is reading your opponent. In this game, there are four different actions, each being a different way to divide up a hand of cards that will be used to attract geisha to your...agency, I guess (I'm not quite sure how the business worked). After the active player divides the cards, the other player chooses one of the divisions and all the cards get played. Each of the four actions can only be used once.

I got into board gaming around 10 years ago, and at the time a lot of the games on this list were the new hotness. Watching this back, you have no idea how many times I wanted to shout at my TV "you haven't played [insert title]??" 😆

Actually, I guess this is what it must have felt like back in the day when I told people I'd never played Caylus. Where does the time go? 💀

Wow! Your list is almost exactly the same as mine was when I tried to get into the board game hobby 10 years ago!! 😂 I actually saw Fresco at my local game shop used and I almost got it, but my wishlist is SO huge I decided to get one I was more interested in, Flamecraft. Hopefully I made a good choice 😅

I would recommend giving Lancaster a try. A nice worker placement game with occasional votes taken to change some of the rules.

I got into the hobby almost 10 yrs ago now and I own about half of these games lol. I love Fresco so much I have the big box and then there was the mega box... So many great expansions. CV is an ultimate favorite with my daughters because of the crazy story of one's life you tell my the end.

It is interesting to see some of these older games, especially when we’re currently in a sort of renaissance for board games, because, like you said, these games are going to be the games that everyone is going to borrow from.

Love that you are doing this, playing older games. I want to play Stone Age too! The oniverse games are great. My favorites are Onirim, Aerion, and Nautillioin. Also, there is an app for Onirim that works great. They do play differently, theres set collecting, tower defense, engine building and even roll and move! Another to try is Oh My Goods! but, I don't know if it quite fits the 10 year mark though.

Fresco s a technique of mural painting executed upon freshly laid ("wet") lime plaster. Water is used as the vehicle for the dry-powder pigment to merge with the plaster, and with the setting of the plaster, the painting becomes an integral part of the wall.

Jenna this is such a unique video concept love it! However I was SO DISTRACTED by the Wild Gardens box behind you I can't believe you have that when they haven't even started crowdfunding for it yet?!?? I can't wait for you to play it!! I've had it on my wishlist since you mentioned it in your video!!

Happy to see Onirim on this list - I think you’ll really enjoy the Oniverse series of games!

I’ll add two older games that are very early examples of their mechanisms and still hold up very well:
Fairy Tale (card drafting) and Bus (worker placement)
