Brian Leiter - Why Tolerate Religion?

The Western democratic practice to single out religious liberty for special treatment under the law is not in sync with the world we live in today, argues University of Chicago Law School professor Brian Leiter in his new book, Why Tolerate Religion?

All people, both religious and non-religious, have certain kinds of beliefs about things they feel they absolutely must do, something he calls "claims of conscience." In the book, Leiter, the Karl N. Llewellyn Professor of Jurisprudence, explores whether there are good reasons behind the tendency to grant legal exemptions to religious claims of conscience while largely rejecting non-religious ones.

Legally speaking, yeah we need some ground rules. But privately, I will never respect or tolerate religion of any kind.

It's a double standard, if you're atheist and expect religious people to tolerate those who don't share their beliefs, but don't tolerate those who share your absence of any religious belief.

If you're atheist, that's fine. I'm a Christian, and while anyone is more than welcome to convert to Christianity, I tolerate those who don't share my beliefs - Jesus Christ taught us to love our neighbour as ourselves. But you should at least be a decent individual and tolerate those who do not share your total absence of any religious belief. Not everyone is atheist.
