In this video, Elon Musk discusses how General Motors (GM) was actually the first car manufacturer to create electric vehicles for mass production back in the 1990s. However, GM made a huge mistake when they recalled every single EV1 vehicle, even from owners that wanted to keep theirs, and destroyed all of them by crushing them in a junkyard. This decision ultimately allowed Elon's company Tesla to prosper, as there was no other major electric vehicle manufacturer on the market at the time. Musk believes that if GM had kept making electric vehicles, there would be no need for Tesla at all today, which ultimately led Elon Musk to create Tesla Artificial Intelligence which also led to his involvement with OpenAI.

True words. GM was in the pockets of big oil, and had no balls to stand up to the pressure. I will never buy another GM product ever.

They replaced the EV1 with the Hummer. 😅

Chrysler did the Turbine car in 1963 and scraped it. It had the capability of using any form of fuel to power it.

Good Elon Musk is bringing that up, too few people know it. There is this great movie about the EV1 "who killed the electric car". I would not wonder, if this story was Elon Musks motivation to bring electric cars back. Of course the vast improvement of LI-ion cells played a significant role too.

It had little to do with the oil companies. It was because they needed so little maintenance, the dealerships would have lost a lot of money, which would have made it hard for them to continue selling GM cars.

Somebody made some booko bucks to authorize to cancel and take away all EV1s

California was going to mandate that a percentage of cars were to be electric.

Because they made much more money on gas car maintenance, and the oil lobby didn't like evs

The funny thing is, there are a lot of us that would gladly still take the ev1 over a Tesla. The EV1 was unique, it had character, unlike these bland Teslas.

You can blame the bush administration for that.

That's why GM shares are what their worth.
If they made EVS with crazy H P people would buy them but bad management keeps screwing their stock worth.

Government wasn't pushing it and there is a lot of money in parts.

In the minds of GM execs it was a mistake to have successful EV. Maybe they wanted people to prove they disliked them or something else but they actually liked EV.
So they had to be destroyed.
That was the turning point not only for their demise but encouraged others to make alternative cars like the Prius and ultimately the Tesla.
To this day GM still resists making EVs.
The end of GM.

Just think where GM would be today if they kept ev1 right up there with Tesla, with home batteries, chargibf stations Gm blow it and after the ev1 recall ten years later GM almost went bankrupt

You did it marry! She didn't!
The oil companies try to prove that it was actually more polluting to have an electric car but that also isn't true and also electric cars have little maintenance and we're just generally better this was true even for the time.
