Nice overview of different wireless protocols, a nice little introduction to several different types.

My personal favorites are Zigbee and Thread. I'm looking forward to seeing how Matter/Thread develops over the next several years as well. It's tough to be an early adopter, growing pains and all, but it's just so cool to see and help develop new tech.

I have unifi router, switch supporting 24 POE+ devices and 3 U7 Pro APs with support for 900 devices. I was keen on theshellys which don't lock you into a cloud and will happily integrate with home assistant. Considering my network is better than most, would you say there are any benefits of zwave and zigbee? Thanks

Zigbee. I started out years ago using x10 and the signals used the power lines to activate the devices and every device had a different code set to it. They were painful. Don't have any of those devices anymore. I use 433mHz a lot as I have small remote control fobs around the place that activate different things via home automation. Have a few sonoff wifi devices with relays for opening the garage roller doors and have attached sensors to those doors to see if they are open. Would like to try lorawan but they seem a bit expensive.

Is Lora wan the same as LoRa offered by Yolink?

I'm intrigued by your suggestion of wired devices over wireless. I would like to hear more on that. I have been running a z-wave network for about 10 years now. Some things are starting to frustrate me; replacement devices (LBZ60Z bulb) no longer available, and Aeotec Smart Switch 6 is no longer available and replacement is incompatible with my z-wave which is provided by American Standard. I've considered building my own system from scratch with my main concern being compatibility of devices and interoperability over time. Any thoughts on this?
