I love that approach tho "You can't know if someone you referenced turns out to be bad so fuck it we'll just never reference anyone ever again"

Correction

All blizzard games now have a policy of not referencing staff anymore (maybe extending to other people too but I know it's staff for sure)

They also removed references to staff in wow as far as I'm aware.

They should have given him a cooler name. You can't replace a cool sounding name with a mediocre one after years with the old one. Failing that they should've gone with James Cassidy and added a backstory of him naming himself after two notorious outlaws.

Me and my friends are still gonna call Cassidy “Arthur Morgan”

Before the controversy I always thought he was named after the mad dog McCree game

It’s annoying because Cassidy is the most hottest character in the game 😩

today was quite literally the moment I found out that Mcree was named after a real person and that he was renamed to Cassidy.

Nah I'm still gonna call him McCree because I'm not gonna let Blizzard pretend that they didn't enable an entire SA/SH culture to exist in their studio. Then every time someone asks "who's McCree" I get to tell them the story :)

I was actually quite sad they had to change the name cause I thought the name fit the concept of the character really well. I'm not at all against the decision to said change and fully understand why they had to. In fact, I agree that was the right thing to do. I am still sad about the whole needing the change in the first place. I do often refer to the character as Mc-Cassidy though cause as OW1 launch day player and since, it was hard for me to change the auto-reference that I've grown accustomed to and almost always caught myself mid-word when calling him out in-game while fighting. I guess it kinda stuck since then.

McCree isnt exactly a rare last name. Changing his first name I could get but changing the whole thing and removing the name that makes the character recognizable? Bad play by Blizzard.

My head cannon is that Cassidy is not McCree. That McCree straight-up died, and Cassidy is just an imposter.

Worst part is almost no one would have known it was named after someone till they changed it. Having the same name is such a non-issue. Changing the name is literally the only reason people think it was a problem, have to be a special breed to not be able to separate fictional and non-fiction characters who happen to share the same name💀

Im so happy that Blizzard realized retconning a fictional character literally solved the whole scandal. brilliant decision and not at all a disregard of what really happened. 😊😊😊

I cant blame them at all for changing the name, but Jessie McCree was a really cool name for a Cowboy. Mad Dog McCree was a old arcade light shooter game (game grumps played it once) and the first name Jessie brings to mind Jessie James.
