Prosecutor Lays Out Charges Against parents Of Michigan School Shooting Suspect

Following the Oxford High School shooting, Oakland County prosecutor Karen McDonald laid out the case against the parents of the alleged shooter Ethan Crumbley, explaining that the 15-year-old's parents bore responsibility for the fatal shooting. Both have been charged with four counts of involuntary manslaughter.

As a school psychologist, I can promise you that this drawing would have set a lot of things into motion, including mandatory assessment and counseling. The only thing that I do not understand in this scenario is why he was sent back to class. In my district, we would have involved the SRO immediately, who would have searched his locker and belongings.

This is a parent issue, but also a procedural issue on the part of the school administration.

The parents knew he was looking to commit a mass murder and gifted him the weapon he used. In essence, they committed a strawman purchase which is illegal under federal law. They then gave it to their child, who is under the age of 18, which again is illegal under federal law.

It's unbelievable that he wasn't suspended until he got that counseling. His parents are more responsible for the murders than he is. They could've cared less about their son's mental state.

I find it extremely sad that this kid wrote these things, yet his parents left him at the school. As a parent, I would be crying and hugging him and promising him that we will get through this. I would have immediately taken him out of school and given my 100% focus on his needs. His parents failed him big time, and now other parents are paying the consequences. Lock them up!
