This happens in all industries. Did a design job for a mayoral candidate, she liked the design except she wanted "the purple purplier". Sent the original back and she loved it. Just shows some people need to feel like they provide vital contributions to a job, even though they clearly don't have a clue what they're on about.

I work as a live sound engineer, and we have a special button on our desks for when somebody asks for something slightly louder or quieter or different in some way when it doesn't need it. We call it the DFA button, which secretly stands for "does fuck all". And the button doesn't exist, you just twist and press a couple things and then say "how's that?" Works every single time.

I've heard this story a few times from other musicians. I think it's more important for these music executives to feel like someone complied with their request.

I hung out with Ed in New Haven CT years ago. He is truly a great guy. Regaled us with lots of funny stories, memorable moments on the road, etc. Hilarious, humble, genuine, and generous.

That is so much like Leland Sklar's producer switch on his bass.

The sound of my childhood. Never gave them the proper listen they deserved but I never turned it off when it'd come on the radio.

I absolutely stories like this. Most “Label Guys” are businessmen, and do t have an actual ear for the mix. This is one of about a dozen I’ve heard from legendary musicians with a very similar story, and most importantly, the same exact outcome!!

It’s amazing how often this concept works in myriad situations.

I've learned what makes a good concert. The vibe. Acts that understand this to be an entertainment industry thrive. The music is secondary to the experience of sharing an event where you leave smiling. One should never miss an opportunity to see Collective Soul live in concert.

Love Ed and Soul. That story is perfect and a great example of the pitfalls of dealing with people.
