The start of a golden age for chart music in the U.K. that lasted right up to around 85/85

1:32 I got to know this song circa twelve years after it was originally released and I played it constantly on my home stereo-hifi. Peers were getting crazy with the likes of Alice in Chains and Pearl Jam, and I was crazy exploring 77-87 sound. Soon it turned out my 80-year old grandma loved "Maid of Orleans" too, as she usually stopped at the door of my room saying "what a tremendous Cult classic for me, just as 0:31. Thanks, Francis!

Thank you for this upload. 41 years already. Amazing how the 80s is hitting the late 30s / early 40s mark now.

Underrated one hit wonder with The Mobiles. The Human League song was a re-release of their 1980 album. That Shakin Stevens song I always think of the Eurovision copy a year later. I do prefer Sammy Hagar version of that song to the original. Can't beat a bit of George Benson. Is that even a song 'The Boiler' 😂 Some underrated Spandau there. Modern Romance was a favourite group of my Mum's. Masterpiece from Soft Cell. Russ carries off the Elvis Presley style there.

1982 is a bit of strange one. The first half of the year is pretty lousy, but it didn't really kick in until midway. I find it the weakest year of the 1980s, even if it's a solid 7/8 out of 10.

My joint favourites are 'Say Hello Wave Goodbye'. A very bittersweet song but well interpreted by Marc Almond. The other joint favourite is 'Never Give Up On A Good Thing' by George Benson. He couldn't do wrong in this era of his career and it's upbeat. Love his voice. Second is 'Mickey' and third is a tie between The Mobiles, Sammy Hagar, Haircut 100, Spandau and AC/DC.

I like to think that in the UK, 80s music really began in 1978 or 79 because that's when they started having several New Wave songs topping the charts, and by 1982, this type of music had been going strong for about three years there. Whereas in the US, 1982 marked the point when New Wave truly began to rise on the charts after having a more minor presence previously (at least in comparison to the UK), and therefore this was the time when what we now see as 80s music really began to rise over there, going on to dominate the charts by 1983.

Dear Francis, you do fantastic job, I'm your great fan!

Are you about to make French charts of every year of 70's? I'm very interested in it, because I'm desperately looking for one song I've heard when I was a kid in 70's. It's the most probably French song, with end of the chorus like "uhuu.... bi-bijou". Song sung by men. It's only I remember and hoping I'll find this special song among others in 70's French charts.

So, carry on with your great job! All the best for you :)

Parmi les 50 chansons présentes, il y avait une variété de style musicaux considérable. Il y avait même Anti-Nowhere League et GBH, 2 groupes de punk considérés alors comme radicaux. C'était une belle époque si on compare avec aujourd'hui.

Soo bad. Soo bad. The only good one here was AC/DC. The 70's was the golden era of hit songs. In the 80's the decline started. Not many good hit songs. In the 90´s only a few. And today? There are no good hit songs anymore. I can't stand listen to todays music. It's absolute trash.
