CHAMPION ALUMINUM RADIATOR on 84-95 Toyota 22R Pickup - Zerek Asian Red Antifreeze discussion SAFE?

This video came about due to a comment on the channel regarding the Champion all aluminum radiator that I'm running in my 1990 Toyota Pickup truck. I was unaware Champion recommended against using "Toyota OEM coolant" in their radiator and that this would void their warranty (although I've been told there are warning labels on the box the radiator comes in). Whatever the case, I touched base with the main distributor for Champion Radiators (as well as Valvoline to ask questions about the Antifreeze they sell for Toyotas) and this video is the result. Hopefully this video is helpful; if anyone has any questions feel free to post them below.

Nice video and getting to the root of it. We have done extensive testing and have partnered with Peak Coolant, I have run it in three of my vehicles, and we worked with a shop for 3 years to install only Peak 10x and have had zero issues with it. Peak's 10x is a newer formula which is safe for all vehicles, and you won't have any issues with it at all. It's more of a conventional 'green' coolant, but won't harm sensors or electronics, and I have it and our radiator in both of my Toyotas: 79 Corona, 94 Pickup.

The pink Toyota coolant, and the Dexcool types, simply don't work in our aluminum radiators, and we've seen leaks and problems, mostly because our radiators are not sealed/closed, they vent to the atmosphere (overflow) with can pull air into the system when it cools down and pulls siphons coolant back into the radiator.

Regarding the flexing, it happens often with a lot of vehicles, so rubber bushings can help a little. I went through three copper/brass radiators where the side mounting brackets kept separating from the core, and finally installed one of ours and haven't had an issue after 5 years with it. These newer vehicles flex quite a bit... definitely not built like the tanks we drove back in the 1960s/1970s.

Incidentally, when I worked at Toyota in the 1990s and thought I'd use the pink Toyota coolant on my 78 Celica, the next day I noticed coolant seeping out from three hoses and dripping down from the cap at the overflow. I immediately flushed it out and went with the conventional green coolant and all problems were gone. It does come in many newer vehicles, but is primarily for a sealed system, so I (and Champion) recommends Peak 10x as I have tested it for three years, and I'm very happy with it. Thanks!

FWIW, I've got 10 years on my '94 22re running regular Prestone green 50/50 coolant with no issues. I swapped to an eBay all-aluminum 3 core radiator about 4 years ago. Previous radiator hadn't failed, but it was a cheap v6-spec replacement with plastic end tanks which I got worried would break apart at some point, especially since, like you said, they're rigidly mounted to the cab and frame.

The Toyota Red Long Life Coolant was the factory fill from 1988-2003, including models with all aluminum engines like the 1990 Lexus V8 and models with all aluminum radiators like many starting in the mid-1990's. So the Red is compatible with aluminum.

Just switched to a big bore lce throttle body 95 22re and replaced the tps having slight idle surge and high idle screwing in the idle screw all the way keeps it idling at like 950. Lce is closed on the weekend sadly. I’m assuming it’s a vacuum leak I had switched to silicone vacuums for whatever little 1/8th hoses are connected to the tb including the dashpot. The big bore throttle body doesn’t have a designated vacuum port for the dashpot(I never adjusted the dashpot screw drove it decelerated didn’t really notice anything wrong) so you have to hook into one of the vacuums up top I used a tee and connected it to the third one. I’m using a teflon gasket they provided as well unless I cracked that I’ll take a look when I can. I also adjusted the little screw jam nut that makes it so the butterfly valve doesn’t stick to the tb unsure if maybe that’s causing the high idle. I did take it for a drive and it drive pretty well I don’t believe the idle surged in drive but I would have to check again to make sure. It didn’t have a high idle in drive though I know that for sure. I don’t have a tachometer but I used some little digital tach that was cheap but in drive it idled at like 750. Could also be my tps maybe I didn’t adjust that great.

Hello Ray, thanks for the video. Do you follow a year mark or a mileage mark when changing the antifreeze/ coolant? I was told every two years, but if I don't drive more that 5000 miles a year, I see no reason to change the fluid every 3 years? My understanding is that the chemicals breakdown and start to form acids, the harm the radiator, and the head. What do you think?

Is that a two or three core radiator? Looks to be a three...
