Fun fact:
Wilhelm ll. was a very fast eater because in his soldier's mind meals were only (meaning primarily) for ingestion and not to be enjoyed. He therefore had a fork where one side was sharpened like a knife so he could eat even faster. Unfortunately for the others at the table the meal was over when the Kaiser was finished so you had to eat as fast as him or end up hungry.

It is actually an amusing scene for those who don’t speak German.. Kaiser Wilhelm discovers a secret music sheet in his bread, which makes everyone wonder what is going on. The bread is a Viennese Saltzstangerl. Emperor Franz Josef wittily remarks, this is our mail, the Saltzstangerl post.

If you overlook the obvious mistake of the Kaiser miraculously being able to use his paralyzed left arm, this is a great scene that captures the pomp and glitter of European royalty before WWI.

Amazing how the Kaiser Willhelm’s crippled hand seems to have healed completely.

It's so good, Wilhelm speaks German with "regular" accent, but Franz-Joseph with Austrian accent...

Wilhelm was so in love with uniforms he redesigned the german army uniform 37 times during his administration, he also promoted himself to a new rank he introduced. For every occasion he had a uniform, even for hunting he designed one for himself. He loved war decorations and rank emblems.

Willhelm- "So these are the popular Wiener Salzstangen, yes?"
Franz- "Yes, and I'm curious of what you'll think of their taste!"
Willhelm- "Yes, me too. Huh, well look at that, there's something in it."
Franz- "In the Salzstangal?"
Willhelm- [lauhgs]
Franz- "Those are..what are these, these are music notes!
Willhelm- "Notes? That's a whole Opera!"
General 1- "Now how is something like that possible? In Willhelm's Salzstangal are music notes inside."
general 2- "Notes in the Salzstangal??"
General 1- "Something like this should must NOT occur.."
General 2- "Don't look at me, I didn't put that inside of it!"
Willhelm- "Is this supposed to have a deeper meaning?"
Franz- "Oh come on, this is a mystery to me of how this got in there."
Willhelm- "There's again something in there!"
(not sure what the general's last word was but I think it's referring to "That is just unthinkable!"
General 2- "Did something happen again???"
General 1- "Of course!"
General 2- "You really can't get to eat in here!" [chuckles]
Willhelm- "Maybe more notes! Let's see what it says."
Franz- "Oh, no that's a letter!"
Willhelm- "A letter! Yes, yes a weird mail system you Austrians have!"
Franz- "A Salzstange mail!"
Willhelm- "Haha, [proceeds to read] "Your majesty, [stops for a moment] "Well, now I don't know if the letter is for you or for me?"
Franz- "Oh, please, since the letter was in your Salzstangal, it must belong to you!"
Willhelm-[proceeds with reading] "Your majesty, reverently I sent you this letter with notes of a new patriotic march. [stops reading] "Ah, a march it is." [Proceeds with reading] "And if I find space in your favour, I request an immediate acknowledge to me. Your most subservient baker Standzig Hübner, in bakery abensbergerstraße 7." [finishes reading]
Willhelm- "Hah, an immediate acknowledge? Now that's an impatient person."
Franz- "Well, I really have to please for your forgiveness, I..such things never usually occur.."
Willhelm- "Haha, I wonder if there's also a letter for you in your pastry"
Franz- "Yes, me too."
Willhelm- "Hm, no, it's empty."
General 2- "Oh, thank god."
Willhelm- "Alright, so if that patriotic march is even just half as good as this Salzstange..Well then, "
[Both] - "Cheers!"

Those who loved this film extract would equally love the Sissi trilogy about the courtship and marriage of Elisabeth and Franz Joseph. Romy Schneider, who was only eighteen when the first film was made is absolutely enchanting and beautiful and Karlheinz Böhm who plays Franz Joseph makes him human and shows his deep love for Elisabeth. The actress who plays Franz Joseph's domineering mother, the Archduchess Sophie is very good. The trilogy ends in1867, and takes considerable liberties with history but is beautifully shot in rich colour with lavish production values. For films over sixty years old they are still very enjoyable and capture something of the love between Elisabeth and Franz Joseph before the failure of the marriage and the tragedies that overtook them.

Given how history was about to unfold, this is like watching the dinner scene from the Titanic.

This feels like an excellent scene, if you feel tired of seeing all those loud parades about glorious leaders and some even charging into battle with their own men, you could just watch two emperors enjoying dinner
