In the change in pressure how come it is being multiplied by 10^3?

We were given enough information to calculate a mass flow rate. So aside from not being given mass, how else would we know that the force of gravity can be neglected?? I'm very confused, because if I calculate the force due to gravity, it's equal to the reaction force in the y direction, and would completely cancel out. I'm missing something fundamental here...any help would be appreciated!
