This week I speak about the daddy of them all, basic Fantasy RPG and how it's hands down the best budget OSR game on the market at the moment. It's also an extremely good game too.

You forgot to say that the PDFs for all of these are free as well as the books being extraordinarily cheap! Good video 🎉

Calithena from Fight On! here....agreed, Basic Fantasy is a great game and a great budget choice for getting into the Grand Tradition of fantasy roleplaying. Nice review!

I'm a huge fan of Basic Fantasy. Everyone should be.

Even if you don't ultimately end up playing BF, the adventures are easily modifiable into any old school adjacent game you might be playing.

Completely agree regarding BFRPG. It holds its own against much better known, and much higher priced, OSR games. If you want genuine old school adventuring, you can't go wrong with their catalogue. It could keep you going for years.

I love reading from a physical book especially if there is a ribbon (the more the better) and if it is offset print!

PS: I had a lot of problems reading PDFs from my computer or phone but I got a Kindle for my birthday and it has made reading PDFs so much better (it helps a lot with my backlog of games as well)

There are a few games I would recommend. One is Olde Swords Reign. Its also free, or about $7 for a book. It is a lot like Basic Fantasy, but it has feats. This allows you to customize your class. Starting as a Fighter, you can add feats over time to eventually wind up as a Paladin. It also has armor and weapon traits so each bit of gear has a use.

The other game is a favorite of mine, but SUPER rules lite. Pocket Fantasy. It is like D&D for races and classes, but the basis of the rules is that a player rolls 1D6, but the enemy also rolls to block damage.

Mini-Six Bare Bones. Ok, so it isn't a D&D clone. This one is a re-work of Star Wars D6 rules from West End Games. It is simplified, and has a simplified combat system of an already simple game.

All of these are free games.

OSRIC pdf is free to download. It has more in common with AD&D than B/X or 0D&D.

You should check out the new edition of Beneath the Sunken Catacombs. It's about 9 pound or 10 bucks USD, so a touch more expensive than white box or basic fantasy but it's packed with options, like class variants and schools of magic. I'd be more than happy to send you a copy if you like :)

I’ve been trying to find a Swords and Wizardry game for a while, seems like they are a rarity.

I refuse to run a game without the hard copy

For B/X OSE- Old School Essentials blows Basic Fantasy out of the water. BF is too basic for me. Played it and I just didnt dig it.
