You don’t need to put log in fuel slot to make charcoal. It can be any fuel (including charcoal).

1 stack of coal is better for long afk smelting sesions because an entire stack of coal smelts more than 1 lava bucket, charcoal is probably better though considering wood is easier to get.

Edit: and you can put together 9 coal into a block of coal whoch smelts 80 items and can stack so the best source is a stack of 64 coal block which will last 5120 items before runing out
