Dr Banks did not cover vaccine schedules for nephrotic patients? Many doctors are not recommending vaccinations for a period of time following immunosuppressant protocols, and a period of remission. Vaccines have been seen in patients, and demonstrated in animal studies, to trigger relapses. Voluntary vaccines, such as influenza, seems to be a higher risk to an adverse event, such as a relapse with additional complications, rather than balancing the benefit of protection from the vaccine, perhaps some precaution is warranted on timing and further evaluation of better vaccination schedules in nephrotic patients.

Can anyone, Dr. Banks?, elaborate on their experiences? Are vaccines just like the viruses. bacteria, that trigger the sudden immune response leading to an NS relapse? NIH and several studies seem to think so. Obviously, this is a high risk decision, and can result serious complications, which is again a reason many doctors have chosen a more cautious path in vaccinating nephrotic patients.

A strong statement and clarification of your professional position would be appreciated. Pneumococcal vaccines were discussed, but with only limited clarity, Again, many doctors and medical professionals worldwide advocate withholding voluntary vaccines, to reduce the risk of relapse and further complications. Shouldn't patients be fully informed of the risks of the vaccine verse the benefits, and let the parent/patient decide as an informed consumer?
