Allowing children use phone unmonitored is like leaving them in public place alone. Now you cannot destroy each and every public space to ensure their safety. Not letting them there alone is what needs to be done.

Millions of children under 18 years have account in all these social platforms. What are they doing to ensure that the child is indeed 18 years and are eligible to use these platforms?

Maybe Cruz has a point, but the best child safety is parents not allowing children to use platforms.

"Typical politician: All talk, No action. Sounds good, Doesn't work. Never gonna happen."

people are judging the senators which fairly saying it is true let the other guy talk, but the senator is also talking about activating a child safety contract and also about how they sent letters to be answered but they were re-scheduled continuosly.

Is it possible to stop this? It's hard to know who your teenage daughter is chatting with on Instagram, Facebook, or other social media. It could be someone your age. Or your teenage son might be trying to buy drugs through these platforms. It's nearly impossible for parents to have control over this because everyone has internet access. The real question is: do we actually need social media in our lives? Does this kind of entertainment cause too much harm to our society?

This was 5 months ago and barely any changes outside of tremendous legal ramifications have been completed!!!

Why is only about the kids? Does everyone think that children are they only ones who are vulnerable? Adults get harassed, bullied, and threatened on Facebook and Instagram. They don't do anything about it. When I was being attacked, stalked, bullied, and harassed by 100s of people, if not thousands, Facebook and Instagram did nothing. After filing several reports with Facebook, they banned ME for 90 days several times. They banned ME for reporting all the bullying and harassment. Nothing happened to the perpetrators ...

Personally, I don't think company has to do anything with it...its the responsibility of parents to look after their children whether the things they do are right or wrong

The right answer to the question is

"Mr. senator it is hard to solve a problem while protecting user privacy. we can collect the name of every single users who search these words if we wish to and submit them to the authority but that would be against the privacy of our user, we can also entirely prevent these keywords if you want us too but that would require the same regulation like the communist party of China, and I wish our democratic country finally recognize the efficiency of such and start writing law to block these keywords, but that requires acknowledgement of how China is 10yrs ahead of us on solving these matter. "

Zuckerberg sucks at answering, "Because we are wrong many times and we trust our algorithm to filter any pornographic material not just child therefore we use the wording might contain, because it could be a cartoon joke, a drawing or something mild in the majority of cases"

Just don't let kids use smart phone, don't let them use social media. Modern internet is not friendly to a big portion of the population of the planet. When I grew up, I did not use smart phone. I just use PC
