From 1 January 2020, the limit for sulphur in fuel oil used on board ships operating outside designated emission control areas will be reduced to 0.50% m/m (mass by mass). This regulation, now populary known as IMO 2020, will significantly reduce the amount of sulphur oxides emanating from ships and should have major health and environmental benefits for the world, particularly for populations living close to ports and coasts.

This video answers the basic question - What is IMO 2020?
How it will impact the shipowner and the shipping industry including the global trade and marine fuel oil market?

Do note that Yes, this new MARPOL regulations will apply to all ships. However, larger ships of 400 gross tonnage and above engaged in voyages to ports or offshore terminals under the jurisdiction of other Parties have to have an International Air Pollution Prevention Certificate, issued by the ship’s flag State. But all sizes of ships will need to use fuel oil that meets the 0.50% limit from 1 January 2020.

We will see a definite shift of HFO by alternative sources in coming years.

In my surprise, VLSFO (very low sulfur fuel oil) prices are lower than IFO 180. That is such a blessing to have this new regulation by IMO.

Yes sure, we have to reduces the fuel consumption content with SOx . ASAP. For the very urgent corrective action is produced the special fuel filter to minimize the risk of air pollution.
What we have done at present, it will be effect to our next generation concern about the healthy air. I really support about this IMO 2020.

Well explained in this if you add some more about Sox and NOX effects to environment along with ozone. Would be great.

Hello, may I know if there is any limitation for the ship to accept a fuel oil with 0.1 Sulfur content but with a low viscosity @ 50 C = 14 cst ? And pour point around 29 C ?

It’s surprising that IMO&MARPOL should be implementing “Low Sulphur Fuel” regulations. It would imply burning High Sulphur Fuel On-Shore is permissible but not at Sea!! It would be more equitable if production of HighSulphur Fuel is prohibited worldwide!!!

Please explain what modification will be done in main engine and boiler while using LSFO

Safmarine started using LSFO and the cost will be forwarded to the shippers.
I think the shippers can pay a couple of hundred euros more, this won't damage the branch but will help the environment.

It is better to use exhaust treatment plant which is lower in cost and if we use other modified lfo fuel which cost is so high that is not manageable.

We need to comply that in order to have a clean and sustainable environment, but we need also to consider the cost to ship owners.

Well done. Lets see if Americans are willing or able to cover the cost increases. Forgot to mention the two scrubber types. Open and closed and how they may not be a benefit to the environment after all.

Why the narator mention doomsday? What is the relationship to the shipping company

With the deteriorating supply of low sulfur sweet crude oil, obviously the high sulfur frack oil is now in the market that demands higher price that will make the IMO 2020 a failure to implement.

The never ending dilemma of costs versus compliance.

Nice video. Are there regulations how to deal with the used scrubber water? Does it go ashore to a water treatment facility or will it be discarded in the sea causing new pollution problems in the future?
