This webinar is intended for newcomers as well as professionals already acquainted with the challenge of decarbonization of the iron and steel industry. Attendees will focus on the topic of decarbonization from the viewpoint of two contributing members of the AIST subcommittee for decarbonization. Clearly, the control of greenhouse gases and the reduction of carbon emissions is at the forefront of today’s global corporate challenge facing the iron and steel industry. Presentations include a comprehensive overview of blast furnace operation while identifying opportunities to decarbonize, followed by one industry proposal outlining a standard that policymakers can consider implementing for incentivization within the steel industry.

Presentations
Greenhouse Gas Considerations for Integrated Ironmaking and Beyond, Joseph Morey, United States Steel Corporation

Greenhouse gases are a major contributing factor to the impact of climate change. Countries are pledging to reduce carbon emissions, and now most corporations are actively publicizing their intentions to decrease greenhouse gas emissions. Steel is considered a hard-to-abate sector for decarbonization, but it is a necessary material for the transition and in our everyday lives. Humans have made iron and steel for thousands of years. Processes are continually being refined and new technologies have enabled advancements in steelmaking. This interactive webinar takes a generalized blast furnace operation and quantifies the extensive web of energy and supply chain materials in search of opportunities to decarbonize. Participants will be asked to take the information and apply the lessons to a different ironmaking process.

Establishing a Global Standard for Low-Carbon-Emissions Steelmaking, Javier Bonaplata, ArcelorMittal Group

There is a clear need for a standard which allows policymakers to incentivize the steel industry to decarbonize and provides customers with a comparable measurement of embodied carbon emissions in steel products. This presentation entices an approach based on a dual-score standard for rating the decarbonization progress of steel producers.
