Offshore wind support structures have mostly been dependent on monopiles which make up about 75% of all offshore wind foundations. Diversity in the types of economical substructure types that are available is needed to avoid, for example, the import of high carbon thick steel plates, the reduction in construction noise, bottlenecks due to shortages of U.S. flagged vessels, and lack of competition that could raise costs. To lower costs we need solutions that engage new and existing U.S. businesses in the offshore wind supply chains. This panel features NOWRDC projects that are investigating improvements to fixed structure foundations in offshore wind. Speakers and projects include:

-José Cerna Garcia-Conde, Chief Technology Officer, Esteyco, Self-installing concrete gravity-base substructure (ELISA Technology)

-Charles Aubeny, Professor, Texas A&M University, Vibratory Installed Bucket Foundations for Fixed Foundation Offshore Wind Towers

-Paul Fleming, Principal Investigator for Wind Energy Control Systems, National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), Wind Farm Control and Layout Optimization for U.S. Offshore Wind Farms

-Eric Smith, Co-founder and CEO, Keystone Power Systems, Tapered Spiral Welding for US Offshore Wind Towers

-Erik ter Host, Research & Development Manager, DEME Group, DEME Offshore US, TSPC Foundation Concept

Moderator: Julian Fraize, Program Manager, National Offshore Wind Research and Development Consortium
