Just last month, it was revealed that Norwegian would say goodbye to 12 of its Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft. However, the airline’s chief financial officer, Geir Karlsen, has now shared that his company will let go of all of its units of the model.

Norwegian made a series of very good and smart choices that ended up sealing its fate: It has been involved in each and every Boeing 787, Boeing 737 Max, and Rolls Royce Trent 1000 problems. Just too much to go through, exacerbated by the pandemic.

I would think that this is a move to reduce cash burn and creditors by returning all leased aircraft to lessors and keep the aircraft they actually own. The Max's are way more efficient but paying a lessor for their use probably doesn't make financial sense for them right now.

sounds like someone will be able to snatch up some Max's pretty cheap...

A220 for fuel efficient short haul instead of MAX and A321XLR for long haul instead of the 787.

It is about 15-20% more efficient than the NG.

But Boeing screwed up big time

I am and i am not surprised by the Max move. On the one hand i would have thought that they already had them in the fleet and that those newer more fuel efficient aircraft would be better to fly. Im not sure however if the added maintenance and training costs of another 737 type would have offset that advantage and effected that decision. Personally i think it’s a combination of that, plus a need to reduce fleet size, plus a feeling of the 737ng is more proven/reliable so they are not risking another grounding they can’t afford, - especially with such a watchful eye on the max. Finally i think it’s about their relationship with Boeing. I think it’s been soured and if Norwegian can survive the next couple of years, when it comes time to replace the 737 fleet they will go with Airbus.

I also wonder if there isn’t another layer to this move. There are a ton of Max’s waiting to be delivered to airlines. As the industry beings to recover and Boeing accelerates deliveries to clear inventory, I wouldn’t be surprised if there is a crash in the secondary 737ng market. Norwegian may be banking on buying cheap NGs to show growth short term. This may then help them secure new capital for an airbus modernization.

Considering the financial state Norwegian is in, it makes sense to upgrade their current B737-800NG fleet for short haul operations. Norwegian Long Haul is now Norse Atlantic Airlines.

Me: *pretends to be shocked*

I wonder if we might see the B737-MAX flying freight. Especially considering that the costs of converting the aircraft into a freighter would be very similar to that of the B737 NG.

Norwegian will rise again, I wonder will IAG take on the cancelled order? They signed a letter of intent at the 2019 Paris air show. Time will tell..🤔

Dumping the MAX is the best thing ever. This pre-cambrian beast is more dependent of computers that other planes. I will never get on a Max.

That is great news living in Stockholm, Sweden. They are normally the cheapest to fly to London. Now I don't need to worry, whether I am getting on a max. What a relief.

Norwegian is in serious financial trouble. No surprise here. Let’s see if they are able to pull out of it.

Aren't the first two letters for the country?
Then shouldn't both be the letters for Norway?

I am not disappointed in this. I've not yet seen EASA's safety changes to the MAX implemented.

I ‘think’ Norwegian has claims against Boeing for the 787 engine dramas & the MAX groundings, i assume the MAX fleet were on lease so the carrier has most likely triggered a clause that allows them to be returned.
These are all assumptions made on the little information i have read online.
